Fixing PS3 YLOD

Get your data off it while its working for the first few days and then buy another (ime)
Perhaps - unusually - I'm not that fussed about my data. It's only GT5 on there, and with PS4 coming out at some point I'd elect to start from scratch anyhow. All I want for now is to play it & watch films. Did the fix last night. Took a LONG time - was being careful & methodical (not my natural state) - and it was a success.
For how long of course I dont know...

My mate fixes these all the time (does something with a heat gun) and then re-sells them. In 12 months I think there's only been one returned
Yes I did the heat gun thing. I'd not used it for a few years & turning it on fried a LOT of things that have been living in it. That'll teach em.I've just done a mates PS3 with the YLOD.
Tried stripping it and replacing the heatsink thermal paste but that made no difference.
So, stripped it again and basically followed the 'heat the board' instructions, but using a blowtorch instead of a paint strip hot air gun, and it all seems to have worked perfectly.
It may not last long, but he's happy that he's managed to save his GT5 game saves to the online storage, and if it goes again he'll buy another.
But, being cynical as I am, I was pleasantly surprised to see it work.
