HTC one, iMac, HTC sync manager and error code 38

I've got a HTC One and an iMac running mavericks with the latest HTC Manager installed, some time ago I managed to synchronise a single playlist to my device, but now nothing....
i connect my phone, HTC manager launches and I can see my phone connected through the HTC app, it's slow but I can check firmware, last sync and so on.
I select a playlist to sync... The little green symbol appears next to the playlist within the manager, click this it states sync in progress then after say a minute I get an error box stating unable to connect to device, reconnect and error 38.
Ive vie updated the manager app but I still get the error, people have suggested the android file utility but that doesn't detect my phone either - weird!?!
