Without warning, I now cannot seem toplay any CD's or DVD's on my Powerbook G4 - last time I stuck a CD in it to put on iTunes it was fine!!!

Anybody offer any help or advice?

Oh, and is there an equivalent of task manager on a Mac, or even a Defrag, for that matter?

any sensible answers most gratefully received.

Ta,

Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor

Does the CD/DVD Mount? (ie. Can you browse it in Finder) Or is it simply not recognising the drive?

Leithen,

I'm looking at the mac at the moment. I have opened up the Activity Monitor but I don't know what I should be looking for.

try apps / utilities / console - this will give you the Unix errors reported by the underlying operating system - watch what happens when you insert a disc

Activity Monitor will only tell you about the programs that are running - if anything seems out of whack you can stop the process - easier and quicker to click the apple logo top left of menu bar>Force Quit. It will tell you if any of the programs are not responding. I doubt however this is the source of your probs.

Instead, does your drive appear in System Profiler? Apple Logo>About This Mac>More Info>Hardware>Disc Burning

Try Repairing Disk Permissions in Utilities>Disk Utility

Follow the instructions Here

Bear in mind, it might simply be goosed..... see this thread

Does the drive whirr or make any laser movement noise?
As above, can you see the discs mount on the desktop?
Disk Utility (Utilities folder) will also show you the disc once it's loaded.
