As 4 computer in the office currently use XP Home and would like it to be upgraded to XP professional for networking reason.

Which package is correct? one software with multi-license or 4 software with each license? how easy is is to upgrade from home to pro ?

I am not sure how it work.

And you're a software developer? yeesh...

No upgrade path from Home to Pro. You'll need to buy a full copy of XP Professional, which is quite expensive. Might be better off buying four new [insert manufacturer name here] machines from the Web that have XP or Vista Pro on them already, and giving away the old ones as Christmas bonusses.

There is an xp pro upgrade from home, unfortunately its about £150, so you would be better off buying a full OEM version of XP pro for about £50.
If you search amazon.co.uk for XP Pro these are the first 2 hits.

The legality of oem versions is a little dubious as they should really be brought with hardware (not necessarily a full pc), but I've never known it to be a problem.

Indeed. We used to run a small company on the software from the MAP. It's like 10 copies of XP, Small Business Server, Exchange, SQL etc etc Very good value.

Bought mine with some hardware, think it was some round ide cables, which classed as hardware and it was ok, has been re-installed several times

Take a look, amazing value for a small consultancy. Pass an on-line exam and get even more.

You're not legal, though.

Microsoft says no.

Q. Can I buy OEM Windows Vista software with a mouse?
A. No, OEM desktop software must be pre-installed on a fully assembled PC.
This used to say "Windows XP" before they upgraded the page.

if it was so bad, ms have had a good 20 times to say thanks but no thanks, for some reason my legit copy passes their test...

however, the disc is cracked and the backup copy has errors, using both cd's it is possible to install windows and i took the advice of the shop owner who did not seem to care at all smile

Just sayin'.

it may well be able to activate and pass WGA, but that's not the same as "legally licensed". Having dealt in a professional capacity with the twisty maze of passages, all alike, that is Microsoft Licensing, I have a (very small) bee in my bonnet about this sort of thing. There are millions of "OEM" installations of Windows out there that are about as legal as a ringed car with no tax and no insurance, and yet the owners are blissfully unaware because "the bloke in the shop said I could buy OEM XP with a mouse/box of blank CDs/tub of screenwipes"...
