The other half's laptop was running CA security centre which is about to expire...any thoughts on what's best now?

Need AV, anti spam, anti spyware, usual stuff really. I'm a bit out of touch as my machine runs corporate standard stuff...

Thanks!

AVG Anti-virus / AVG anti-spam / AVG anti-rootkit etc all free if you download them individually rather than a whole package.

As for general security try Zone Alarm.

Other than that:

AVG Anti Virus/Rootkit etc
Windows Firewall
Windows Defender

That is probably the best combination of security and hassle free living (as her IT support).

I'd add Spybot and Adaware to that list.

Errr... do you *have* to use Windows? A few good alternatives exist that don't have the security problems.

If you *do* have to use Windows then a nice overkill is to run Linux as the host OS and run your Windows in a virtual machine, and let Linux ipfw settings stop any shite coming in and going out (ZoneAlarm pretty much does this sort of thing).

You'll still be vulnerable to some browser exploits / mail download trojans etc. so unless you need it, choosing a different browser to IE may be worthwhile.

The AVG products as mentioned above come recommended as well, though some 'internet security' products use up so much power and slow disk I/O down that you'd get an instant speed boost by either changing internet practices somewhat, using a decent firewall or changing operating system entirely...

Just don't run that Safari browser, full of holes that one smile

AVG for free stuff. Kapersky is very good if you want to pay.

Kaspersky really screwed up my machine for work, and their help (responded in 3 days each time) couldn't sort it before the refund period ran out. It also screwed up my father-in-laws machine so it wouldn't boot after installing. Out of 3 machines, it screwed up 2 of them. The one that worked was a brand new install of vista, so not much of a test.

Don't use it in conjunction with hamachi.

For non-IT literate friends and family, I'd say pay the £25 for Norton Anti Virus (Not 360!) from Amazon. Far less hassle than avg too, as you don;t need to do as much manually. Been down the AVG route with friends and family and they didn't want to trust it as it was free...

OK thanks for the tips all, I'll have a look at AVG and if I'm not convinced then Norton it is.

Thanks again!

Keep well away from norton.

If you really can't help but buy some AV try NOD32.

Norton s the whole computer up. Don't use it. Norton stuff was good back in the 80s but as soon as he sold out it all went to shit.

Norton makes it run like a slug and keep crashing and it gets in the way of installing stuff even when you turn it off.

AVG is much better.

Muppets who say they "don't trust AVG because it's free" are simply muppets and should be ignored. Possibly by editing the resources of AVG and changing all displayable instances of "AVG" to "Norton" biggrin

I'm surprised no ones mentioned Avast. I've used this for years and had no problems whatsoever.

I've never actually had any problems with Mcafee virusscan. Possibly because I use the enterprise version; I've know a lot of people with the home versions come to grief, though.
Might be worth having a word with the IT guys at work and seeing what they suggest; many companies have a global licence covering home PC's as well.

Thanks for the OP for this - just coming to the end of my second year with Norton and looking for replacement. Its not been too bad, but a combination of recent programs and their size has really played havoc with my Babbage and I need something that is less bulky.

Am trialing AVG Antispyware and SUPERantispyware along with Spybot - like the sound of the rest of the AVG suite so will give those a go too.

Anyone know how to remove Norton when the subscription is over?

+3. Used for years now and very good. Unlike AVG, once registered the only time you notice it is when you need to upgrade the version or re-register (after 14 months). AVG does occasionally pops up trying to flog you some registry checker/antispyware,etc,etc.
