I'm starting to run out of space on my iPod, figuring on picking up a larger capacity unit (unsure - 80 or 160gig).

Main question - is there an easy way of "backing up" all the tracks on one iPod, then transfering over to another?

Er ... thats where one of the problem lies.

Quite a lot of the tracks were dragged straight from my old laptops hard drive into the iPod directly via iTunes. Said laptop was given to the ex-wife, I had absolutely no need for it.

As far as I'm aware, iPods are a one way street - you can fill them up with stuff, but taking off means deleting them. There's probably someone out there who's worked a way around it though

loads of apps out there to backup your ipod. Anapod and copypod are both meant to be very good, I need to do this myself as my ipod is updated from more than one PC, so I'll let you know if I use either anytime soon.

Ta!

I've tried some other pieces of software months back to extract some of the apple lossless stuff I had on there, so I could re-code it in AAC (space was getting tight), but they were invariably a real pain to use.

That looks pretty easy to use, I'll just have to set it off, and wait for a while ....

Haven't used anapod, but use RedChair software for my Rio Karma and it's great.

Anapod is well known and revered for getting music off the iPod.
Shouldn't have any problems with it.
Might also be worth spending a bit of time looking at versiontracker.com for others, and ipodlounge.com

You can do it yourself fairly easy. From memory steps are

i) Configure ipod to be a USB HDD
ii) Browse around until you find the folder where the music is stored (will be obvious) track titles will be in some kind of code and albums mixed up etc but does not matter as you are copying all of it
iii) Copy it all to the PC
iv) Open each folder and drag all tracks into itunes
v) itunes sorts out track names etc
vi) copy onto new ipod in usual way

I've occasionally browsed the file structure on the iPod, would have thought they encrypted more than just the file names - id tags and the such as well.

If its that easy, a drag and drop shall be done then!
