Quick question if i might please.

I'm about to buy a Kindle from Amazon however do i buy the WiFi Kindle @ £111.00 or do i buy the Free 3G + WiFi Kindle @ £152.00.

Do i spend the extra £41.00 for the 3G & is it a necessity for the Kindle? I havent got a clue so please can i have some honest expert advice & guidance.

Thank you.

I'd post this in the computers section but if you want to use it outside your house I would go for 3G and wifi so you have more freedom with where you can use it.

It depends on how you use it really. 3G is really useful if you want to be able to buy books/add documents when away from a wifi network.

In addition it's handy for checking emails and other bits. I got the 3G version, as I thought an extra £40 for internet access with no ongoing subscription was worth it. If you already have an iphone or other smart phone with internet access then there is less benefit as those are much better for general browsing.

So you post in the right section, they close that down, and keep a kindle thread in the computer games section... mental.

Still, if I were you, I'd just go for the wifi version, not the 3G. I don;lt use 3G on my ipad, or any other device, if I'm truthful. I'd rather spend the extra on a nice case and a few books.

definatley pay the extra, free internet when your abroad whilst not the fastest no roaming charges and I have stayed in hotels where the paid for wi-fi has been slower...great for sitting on the beach and looking at pistonheads or emails, I normally save at least a £100 a week when traveling.

3G ive got the wifi only and have started taking it to work to read at lunch time, being wifi only if I've read anything on my iPhone i can only sync at home. Also of you want to add books while away from home then 3G is the way to go.

Depends how you intend to use it, I went through the same thought process a month of so ago. As others have said, 3G is the free internet access version and my first thoughts were that it was the no-brainer choice.

But in the end I went for the cheaper wi-fi only version because it fitted the way I intended to use it, and that's purely for reading books. The added attraction of email and surfing didn't appeal to me because I don't like using tiny keypads; the screen is a slow refresh and I reckoned that if I want to do email or internet I'd use a laptop/desktop.

But the main reason was battery life. I've never tested the claims, but Amazon say something like a month with wireless & 3G disabled, but down to 11hrs with 3G enabled and that isn't enough for me. So I got the wi-fi and 99.9% of the time even the wi-fi has been switched off.

You could just switch on 3G to download a book and then switch it off to save power, but I didn't see a great advantage. For me it's just as easy to hook the kindle up to my PC, import half a dozen books and then disconnect; that will keep me going for a month or more, so the 3G (or even wi-fi) isn't worth it to me.

If you travel around a lot and are away from an internet connection, or intend to store only one book at a time on the kindle, then 3G is ideal even if you have it disabled 99% of the time to save battery power. Otherwise save some cash & get the wi-fi.

It's worth every penny (for me) of the extra £40 simply for the fact that you can surf the web anywhere in the world for free via 3G. Plus, I can't think of any other device that is properly usable in bright direct sunshine.

The browser isn't great, pictures are poor, videos non-existent, it doesn't support multiple tabs and it works best with mobile websites, but it's free. PH mobile site works very well on it.

Iv got a wifi kindle, and I only turn on the wifi once a week to download new books, and my battery is on 70% - charged it 6 weeks ago, and I use it 2 hours a day (the joys of getting a train to work!)

Bought one for the OH's christmas last year, went for the wifi only, not because i'm a cheapskate (honest) but because I didnt see the point in having 3G when 99.99999% of the time it will be used in areas with wifi, and I loaded it with hundreds of books anyway.

If you travel abroad lots, then yes, go for the 3G, if not, don't.

I bought the wi-fi version as I was working away for a few months. Only ever used the wi-fi to download a load of free e-books and a couple of paid ones and haven't used the wi-fi since.

The web browser isn't good enough to use everyday and a gimmick really. I guess you only need the 3G version if you read e-books on lots of different devices and need to keep them constantly synched.

Other than that, save yourself £40.

Battery life easily a month with the wi-fi off. I use mine everyday, it is superb. The only downside is you can't pass on a book when you've finished like you would if you bought a hardcopy.

What else can you do on a Kindle with 3G, then? Can it run Flash and Java?

I want it for the OH who wastes her time reading sloppy love story type books which drives me nuts!!

As the thing is only available from Amazon i havent been able to have a look at one so i am still none the wiser as too which option to buy or how easy it is to use.

I assume that by having the 3G option it makes downloading books from the internet easier? If you dont have the 3G option how do you downlaod the books?

Stupid questions i know however i am pretty much useless when it comes to anything too technical.....

It is very easy to use. If you buy the books from amazon, they get delivered automatically to the kindle when you connect it to wifi. If you have books you acquire elsewhere, you can use software like Calibre (a little like itunes but for books) to manage them when it is plugged in via USB. It appears on the computer like a memory card so you can just drag things to it.

So i am getting the impression that it isnt worth the extra £40 for the 3G unless you are away from home a lot.

You dont have to use Calibre - you can email the doc (if its a word file, pdf etc) to your FREE kindle email address and it will sync with the device over wifi.
