New iPad 2018?
Discussion
My old iPad needs replacing, it's a bit older than God and is sluggish even starting the browser, let alone surfing (A1430 2012).
Don't need the iPad Pro features (nor price) but the current iPad is pretty much a year old.
In the next round of updates, do you think it'll be updated, or dropped in favour of the all-singing, all-dancing Pro?

It's that that prompted my question.
If it's not to be replaced/updated, then now's the time to buy, before it's discontinued.
My wife has had various iterations of iPad through to the iPad Pro she has now.If it's not to be replaced/updated, then now's the time to buy, before it's discontinued.
Whilst its a fair bit more expensive than the iPad, her feeling is its definitely worth it.
I use an ipad a lot
If mine packed up, it would need to be replaced immediately
If that meant missing an upgrade by a few months (likely 6 or more in this case) to replace one that was already over 5 years old, so be it.
The Apple refurb store has the June 17 ipad pro 12.9" WiFi 64GB at £649
and the June 17 ipad pro 10.5" WiFi 6fGB at £529
I have the big one and I can't see it being replaced with anything smaller next time
That said, I still use a mini 3 quite a bit when out and about as it fits in my coat pocket so well

Don't think we're likely to see any major changes, or for it to get dropped in favour of Pro models only. A9 processor and 2GB RAM is still great for typical iPad tasks - web browsing, playing video, games, etc. The 9.7" size is good for most people and uses, Apple pretty much has this part of the market sewn up - alternatives are either more expensive and a bit worse, or cheaper and much worse.
I'd guess at a small price drop, maybe with more storage (although starting at 32GB these days is OK for most people), much like the iPhone SE did. The iPad Mini on the other hand is getting on for 2 1/2 years old and likely to get revised or dropped IMO.
We had a 4th gen iPad (so a little newer than yours) and went to a iPad Air 2 last year (so a bit slower than what you're looking at) - it was a huge improvement. If you need or want it now, then buy and enjoy it - there'll always be something a bit faster and/or cheaper around the corner.

i got given one by a previous employer and i kind of hated it. Big and heavy enough to be almost a laptop, but with all the usability and compatibility shortcomings of an iOS phone. I see people using them for work and they have bought a stupid little keyboard and a stupid little stand, and a stupid little mouse... just get a fking macbook! It may have come on a lot since generation 3, but I just enjoy having a keyboard and a bigger screen. I guess lots of people do like them though (I was being humorous before in saying that no one has them anymore... although i haven't seen people talking about them anywhere near as much as 5 years ago), and the people that like them generally just want them for browsing the internet. Fine I guess.

I had an iPad and went back to an ultra portable laptop, but I can see why they would be ideal for the majority of people who just want to browse websites and consume media.
Same,When phones got bigger and laptops got ultra portable, I feel like a tablet is neither here nor there. Ours felt very slow after only 3-4 years, which seemed like a bit of a rip off for the money.
But imho it's just about consumption vs creation. If I'm browsing a bit or watch some videos, I find the phone plenty. If I want to type an email or something I usually grab the laptop.
Isn't an iPad Pro as dear as a MacBook Air? Besides the screen, I'd have the Air every day of the week.

I see quite a lot of people who have a proper desktop computer as their primary machine but have abandoned laptops in favour of an iPad. This is quite a good combination I think. The screen on a £300 iPad is still as good or often way better than many laptops costing 2 or 3 times the price...

No. And having had both, I can and did take the iPad Pro. Depends what you want it for, but for the things I wanted it for, the iPad was massively better than the MacBook Air.Bikerjon said:

Pretty much what I've done. I have no need for the capabilities of a laptop when I have a desktop PC that easily destroys all but the most expensive laptops on the market and then some.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
