Ipod hardware failure

My Ipod says hardware failure go to apple website and it says it requires repairing at a apple shop, any ideas of any other ways it can be fixed?

its a version 5 ipod and it is not under warranty

How do i restore to factory settings it is saying go to www.apple.com/support/ipod it is showing the symbol for hardware failure

It looks like I will have to send it to apple as I cannot put it into disc mode or update its software

Hi I eventualy contacted Apple (yesterday)they told me £166 to repair or replace it I then quoted sale of goods act 6 years etc after being put through to another dept and being on the phone a long time they are sending me a box to return my ipod and said they will replace it with a new one for nothing. As PJ S said google SOG ACT it worked for me so thanks very much
