Well, that was a bit of a disaster.

2nd in the queue.
Carphonewarehouse chip-and-pin system down so no-one could buy a phone.
Eventually, 45 mins later they agreed to accept cash.
Get home, attempt to activate and get:

"O2 has found a problem with your existing mobile account" when I try to activate via iTunes with my PAC code.

I called O2, who obviously have had lots of similar calls. They say it is a technical issue and to try in the morning... frown

Hmm...

Do you really want an O2 account?

If not, and you already have a perfectly serviceable SIM with an acceptable data tariff, email me and I'll help you hack the iPhone.

I can do both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 now hehe
Thanks for the offer.

My tariff (on Orange which I hated) ran out 6 months ago, so I've been on t-mobile PAYG awaiting the iPhone since then. The O2 tariff, whilst not amazing, isn't bad for the minutes/texts and especially data I want - so I've not problem IF the service is any good.

I'll wait until the morning and see if it works. If not, I'll hack.

Fed up now as it took over an hour to buy due to chip-and-pin problems at the Carphonewarehouse store. Ended up buying in cash!!!

Ps. It does LOOK nice though smile

Mine is still 'awaiting activation'. Calling O2 has got nowhere - it will done in their own good time...they had better not decline me!

Phoned O2 and I've got to email them my port code - meanwhile continue with new number. Got through activation (barstewards wanted a credit card deposit thanks to their credit check - might have to investigate my credit rating...) and I'm happily doing the initial sync.....
How long did it take for them to get back to you?

I finally managed to start my activation at 4:30am
Got an email at 4:32am saying my activation had been referred
Got email at 8:07 to say my activation i now being processed.

Called O2, who couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything, just I have to wait...

(Now when I connect I get the 'store may be busy message....')

I think hacking might actually have been the easier/quicker option!!

I just called my bank, who say my credit rating is fine, and that they've received no credit check requests in the last few days...

Come on O2...

Going out at 1pm for a long boring day so could do with a toy to play with...

FINALLY got through to someone helpful at O2, who took details of my driving licence and credit card, both came back positive so I'm approved.

Of course, the iTunes store is now down!!!!

Gotta laugh...

Erm... Seems like a whole bunch of crap just for a phone...
I'm now activated smile

It's amazing. Far better than I was expecting, and I was expecting a lot.

Was just round at my parents installing their new iMac and my mother, who is in her 70's had a play with the iPhone. 5 minutes later and she had already sent some email, done some SMS's, played some music, etc etc. She was thrilled with it as she's never been able to work out texting before!! This thing is seriously easy to use.

Definitely best phone I've had smile

The pinch zoom is the big thing about the iPhone browser. It shows the page in full mode (normally illegible with lots of small text) and you don't have to scroll around - you just zoom in on the bit you want by using two fingers to pinch / unpinch.

Difficult to describe but utterly intuitive to everyone I've shown.
Also, the anti-aliased rendering makes small sizes readable. Best mobile browser I've ever used by a large margin. Pity no Flash support though.
