Mercedes R107 SL - not sure if I am able to do this......
Discussion
So apologies.....if this is the case.....just trying to ensure a lovely car goes to a PHer who will appreciate it.
I am a big R107 fan....my favourite car (well, one of them)
On my way to work I passed an R107 SL for sale - I don't know the owner, but enquired about the car as it's just what I would be looking for - dark metallic blue, cream leather, hard top. But looks to be a post 85 300 SL. FSH and 57k on the clock.... It's a beauty... Price is a bit rich for me at £17,500, but compared to the specialist dealers it looks to be a steal...
Had a long chat with the owner - he just wants it to go to a good home - but as yet, it is not advertised anywhere. It is located in Alvechurch (5 mins of junction 2 of the M42). I said to the chap I would mention it on here....just to see if there are any R107 fans in the market.... From what I can see the car is mint (private plate included too). To confirm, it is not my car and the seller is not a friend of mine....just an old boy with a passion for cars....
If anyone is interested I can provide contact details.... again, if this breaks any rules then sorry, but my motives are genuine here.....

£17.5k sounds pretty steep to me for a private sale. www.theslshop.com has plenty of R107s for sale and I think there's only 2 above that value.

When you say post 85, you mean 380 / 500 series as opposed to 350 / 450 ?
That being the case why ?
No, I mean 300, 420, 500. That being the case why ?
The market prefers them. The brakes and suspension are a bit more modern and the rust-proofing was better. They're a bit faster and lighter on the juice. But most people just like the look of the front air dam and the 15" flat face wheels.
Personally I prefer the look of the pre-1985 cars, but taste is a matter of taste.
Mine will never be for sale you know that.
I was just curious as to value, sadly they made far to many to be worth anything.
Im not sure if the comment above regarding the later models commanding more money is true or just that a few later low mileage ones are around currently, I would have thought an early all original car would be worth more, didnt the SL shop have a ultra low mile 450 recently at 40k was it ?

I love my 420 SL. They do have many corrosion weak spots, even the post facelift cars with the galvanised body panels but these are all well understood and there are many specialists who can sort them out. They are very solid and well put together cars. Good late cars can be anything up to low 20's for low ish mileage examples, while very low mileage cars can fetch very much more. I don't think they will ever make big money because there were so many built. The 420 is one of the more rare models, since only about 2400 or so were built.
Great cars IMO.

They are holding their value at the moment, which is amazing given (1) the number made, (2) the number for sale and (3) the state of the market (they are too expensive to be bought on a whim, too cheap to appeal to the seriously rich). They will go up in value and it will happen quite suddenly when the number of good cars plummets. Give it no more than ten years, probably less. Unfortunately the market is besotted with the post-1985 cars but lord only knows why: that front spoiler, dear oh dear! As always, it will be the early cars like yours which command the highest prices in the long run. The only thing is, you're not using it enough.I was just curious as to value, sadly they made far to many to be worth anything.
