Very soft. Fast but not particularly exciting. are you talking about the c63?

there is no crescendo of power, I thought there was. the acceleration is rather similar to the m5 e39?

CLK63. I remember at the time the engine was lauded as loving to rev, but I found it to have a typically Mercedes AMG (of the era) power delivery. Much faster than the 55 but still linear delivery as far as sports engines go.

Worth a test drive to see how you feel about it.

I had a c43 saloon and for various reasons wanted an estate.

The options were c43, e53 and c63. I considered an e63 too.

Test drove c63 and to be honest I found the car out of balance, for me. I wanted a daily driver and, as an occasional car it was superb but I just felt it was a little ott. A but like a curry that’s too hot to enjoy, you can’t taste it. Well I can’t. There will be people everywhere who order a phall every time, but to me it’s just an extremely spicy plate of grub.

I ended up with a c43, wanted the e53 but they were few and far between second hand and also would not fit in my garage, which is a useful attribute for me to clear space on the drive occasionally.

Actually quite like the newer model of c43, more refined and different enough to not feel completely conned in the upgrade.

I’ll likely go e63 next as it is an upgrade.

I'm owner of a turbo car with aggressive and very old school power delivery and which is very fast. cars with linear power and big low-end torque are nice but end up feeling boring. I thought I would find some thrust with the 63. Afterwards, as you say, a test when I have the chance.

the m3 e46 didn't have as much thrust as the m5 e39 but I preferred the power delivery of the s54 at high revs much funnier and less dull

The problem with the 55 is that the power delivered doesn't seem strong to me at high revs, a bit like an M5 E39. I was looking for something that increases in power crescendo with the revs like an M3 E46, but with a lot of torque and thrust unlike the M engine and Honda etc. the 6.2 seemed ideal to me, Lots of low end torque and an even stronger high end. a bit of the best of the world in my vision, even if I haven't tried it
The 55 is not for you.
Tried an M3 (2 actually) when I was rady to move on from both my M5's. On both occasions I dsscrthe cars as gutless. You had to rev them to get any sort of response. As you rightly say just like a bigger Vtec engine.
I like my power instantly hence my love for the 55 and 55k. Neither is a screamer.
The N/a 55 is a great engine ( in my humble opinion) but doesn't need to rev to 9000 rpm to do its stuff.
Can't speak for the 63.. just too shouty for me
Agree here about the M3 - I owned a manual E46 for 2 years, it had to be revved to get the magic out the engine. The earlier M5 (E34) was more pronounced off-cam too. All part of the charm.

I hadn't driven my SLK 55 for a week until yesterday, and several weeks since I used the engine properly - it has instant performance from low revs, it felt surprisingly quick, especially bearing in mind I've owned it for several years now. The gearbox is something that frustrated until I worked out how to use it properly.

What is the pricing difference between a C55 and a C63? And rear subframes - are these an issue?

I think I'd like the C63, but they do appear to to have a bit of a Cocaine 'n' Gym image problem, not as stereotypical as the A35/45 perhaps. Don't think I've ever seen a female driver or passenger in these cars - always groups of lads, logo'd up in BOSS.

Go for the estate. A superb family car. I used to chuck the bikes on the roof (and in the back) the OH used to love taking it out too.

The coupes seem to attract the wrong attention on occasion, but I had no issues with mine. Although, granted, mine was a little shouty to look at, but without the graphics, could have blended in a little more (I did remove a stripe that went down one side of the bonnet and roof, but stuck with the graphics on the door).

I ran it for a couple of years and aside from servicing, a cam cover leak, and a wheel sensor, it was spot on. Plenty of fuel kept the engine in tune though!

I was referring more to the A35/45's I've seen. However...

...did you 'apply' the graphics? If so, why?

The previous owner did, along with a stripe on the roof, rear and bonnet. I removed the top stripe but it took such a long time to remove the glue and get the paintwork back into shape, I looked at the side stripes and thought sod that!
