OK, i think i better explain what happens with the service indicator.

yes there are different types of ASSYST.

New ASSYST is every year or 15,500miles. this makes no difference what type of oil you use, but you do have to tell the car what grade of oil you are using.

Now all other ASSYST programmes, they are not done every year or on a fixed mileage, they are done whenever your car needs it, now this is affected by grade of oil, type of drving you do, how hard you accelorate / brake. long or short trips.
when you select upgrade oil full sys, this can affect the service by about 3-5k.

I have known ML's that do motorway driving go 2 years without a service.

and when you car goes into the garage and they reset the indicator, just just an estimate, it changes all the time due you different conditions.

hope this helps.

Not really.

What is completely unclear to MB owners is why flexible ASSYST works perfectly until the car's first service at maybe 15-16K then after the dealer has serviced the car, it comes back reset to 10K and counts down mile for mile, even though the car is being used exactly the same as before.

The suspicion, of course, is that the dealers, either deliberately or by ommission, do something that causes ASSYST to lose its flexible element.

There's also huge confusion on cars built over the last couple of years as to whether they are on flexible ASSYST or fixed interval servicing - it appears to be almost random.

The service indicator on the wifes car was definately set to 10k for "B" service it does now appear to be going down mile for mile as others have stated. I will pop into the dealers when passing as I know one of the sales guys and find out what his stance is on this.

My Service A Sheet states:

Restriction for AMG: Only Engine Oils SAE XW-40 (X=0, 5, 10, 20) May Be Used.

Yet the dealer used 0W-30 in my SLK32 AMG at 26856 miles a couple of weeks ago. Now, at 27252 miles, the ASSYST shows 9700 until a B service is due.

Page 4 of the Service Sheet states that when using oils of the higher specification 229.5, the correct oil specification MUST be programmed or the shorter oil change will be set.

So:

1. Why didn't they use 0W-40?
2. Why am I only seeing 9700 to the next service?

Answers:

1. Only the dealer can answer this
2. Because it seems like MB have designed a car with a variable servicing system that most dealers have no idea how to set or reset correctly, or which car has which system and how it works. Try asking them some in depth questions about how the system works, I normally get a hmmm..I'll find out and get back to you sir, then they either don't bother calling back or give me an unsatisfcatory answer.

Sorry this doesn't help, I just felt like joining you in your rant!

This really is completely unacceptable from a brand like Mercedes-Benz.

Using the wrong oil seems to be common - it's particularly an issue with EU4 diesels that have a particulate filter - it's essential that low ash oil is used, but it seems it rarely is.

Of course, what will probably happen is the dealer will swear blind the correct oil has been used, but that it's been written down wrong, so you're left dangling with complete uncertainly about what they've done.

As for the service interval - it's unthinkable that they wouldn't know how to reset it. They work on MB's all day long and the service reset is the same on all of them. They choose not to program is properly so that the car comes back quicker for its next service.

I am now driving my second C-Class 180 Sport my frst was a 2004 with the original Assyst system and the new one 2008 (few weeks old) is using the new Assyst system.

On my first car for the first 20,000 miles (two services) the car counted down mile for mile from 10,000 to zero. I actually went to my MB dealer to ask if Assyst had been disabled which they denied. After the 20,000 mile service my job changed and the type of driving I was doing changed - I was driving further with a lot more long distance motorway driving. When I used the onboard computer to check oil it would tell me to add 0.5 litres of oil now and again (never gave me a warning - just I requested for it to do a check). Every time oil was needed the distance to next service would increase at last MB variable servicing as expected. So the trick is to monitor the oil - never over fill - but make sure you add as necessary and you will get the extra miles between services!!

Now for the 2008 model with Assyst plus, I believe the servicing now is meant to be every 15,500 miles or 1 year. Now for the interesting bit - the 2008 model no longer displays miles to service only days, and to my suprise it is not counting down day by day. Yesterday (I had been driving the car for three weeks) it was still saying that the car had 355 days to go, today this has gone to 350 but the car is 21 days old so you would expect this to be 344. So is this year fixed or are we still on variable servicing - who knows ???
