Up and down day today!
This morning we were at the point where i was sure i was going to send the car back as the DP wasn't going to pay for the work to be done.
3.30pm and i get the call to tell me the dealership will pay the bill at my local bodyshop!!!!!
Looks like the car is staying and its going to be finished as it should have been at day 1! Win!!
I don't want to cause you to think bad but there is no way that is a 11k car. Merc paint is pretty tough and it takes a lot of abuse, or miles, to get the paint to chip like that. My E class has 460k and the doors don't have any chips on the doors! The front was resprayed a couple of months ago and I have seen how quickly it chips, unlike when it was original.
It'd be quite easy to clock that car and keep the MOT and servicing to the intervals so nothing shows up, particularly if it only has one owner.
Saying that, it may well be genuine and just used and enjoyed.
It doesn't bode well though, maybe it's a sign to walk away?
Good luck though.
Im convinced ive got an excellent example of an excellent car and once the paintwork is redone it'll be immaculate throughot. MB / the bodyshop are now throwing in the MB Starguard Paint Protection as an added bonus! Im happy with the result and will now start to use the car as it was intended.

Final update before the car goes for 'restoration':
Had the car checked over mechanically as mentioned previously. All 100% sound and all service history and mileage checks out so no worries about 'clocking' etc. No reason to suspect its been thrashed or crashed either having located the first owner, its only the roads that the previous owner drove that could be to blame for the damage. That and the fact he ran a construction company so probably did a couple of miles on rough ground when on site. Ive checked the suspension and all under-trimmings and everything have washed up clean with no signs of wear or damage. Job done!
Last weekend i had the tracking done as the car has 4 new tyres, so i thought it'd be rude not to have it all properly aligned. Also i cleaned the alcantara steering wheel. Its amazing how much grime gets in there. Simple job if youre interested: Just gently brush the pile back with a toothbrish and then with some PH neutral baby wipes massage the material to remove the muck within. It only took 4 sheets per side of the wheel to get it back to looking new so its no great effort. Dont use anything designed for leather as its not a natural material.
Tomorrow the car gets a new screen fitted and ive insisted on OEM of course. Thats the next thing on the list.
Finally the beast is booked in for the 23rd for 5-7 working days worth of paintwork at my chosen MB approved bodyshop. Getting a C class diesel as a courtesy car so not too bad a run around for the time its there. The car is having pretty much a full job done on it. In order to repair the areas ive highlighted the adjacent and surrounding panels have to be painted and blended too. Of the panels on the car, the only ones that wont get paint are the front bumper, bonnet, boot lid and roof. The rest will all be painted and blended. As a result im paying a percentage contribution to have a proper job done. I dont mind as it will effectively be a new car once i get it back.
Many of you said at the beginning that i should have handed the car back and taken the offer of a full refund, and with good reason. I must say now that im really glad i didnt. Its a stty situation having all that damage on a car with only 11k on it but looking past the cosmetics and at the more important stuff it really is an ace example and should be immaculate when its all done and dusted. As per my usual i'll post up pics when its complete.

Sorry, but no matter that the service record "checks out" - plenty of ways that can be fudged.
I've a 61 plate Citroen C1 with, coincidentally, 11k miles on the clock, mostly M62. It has ONE stonechip on it that I found when washing it this morning. A very small chip.
My 12 plate SLK has two chips at 8k . One small one on the nose and one just in front of the NSR arch. That's it.
The fact is that the red AMG has no way done 11k - if it has it's done it all on a rally track or in the hands of a very unsympathetic owner - what else has he been unsympathetic with?. It's also had paint which WILL show to a future buyer and will have devalued the car. 100% I'd have sent that back, no question. I'd rather have bought the other one at an extra £6k and had some provenence. Just my 2p.

Fair point, well made. Im still happy with it though, but i take your point. I've a 61 plate Citroen C1 with, coincidentally, 11k miles on the clock, mostly M62. It has ONE stonechip on it that I found when washing it this morning. A very small chip.

On the service history: Can you explain how this could have been fudged? Ive got both service printouts now. One from the Inverness dealership from last year when it had circa 5k on it, and the other from the dealership i bought it from at 10'700 miles. I know that there is a culture of 'clocking' out there, but it was my understanding (especially with German cars like Merc etc) that its no longer just a simple case of adjusting the mileage on the DIS. I was under the impression that the real mileage is recorded and encrypted on the cars ECU and that's what is automatically downloaded at service time, not what the DIS displays.
Im not fighting your argument, just curious as to how this 'fudging' can realistically be done on complex modern machinery.
