If anyone needs any Merc advice........
Discussion
Hi everyone, i have been on here a few weeks now, and thought it may be a good idea to introduce myself on here!!
My name is Ben, and i am a Technician for Mercedes Benz of Eastbourne, and i am offering my services if anyone needs any advice on anything Merc.
Ill keep an eye on here but you can e mail me on bloodyniceben@btinternet.com or start a new post!
I do work silly hours and dont get on here that often, probably twice a week, you would probably be better off sending an e mail.
Cheers
Ben

It's a bloody nice offer of advice, Ben! I've made this topic sticky, and I would suggest you set it up so that you have an RSS feed on your computer, rather than e-mail. Most FAQs are exactly that, so it will be good to let everyone read the advice you're giving. I'm just waiting for the parts to arrive from AMG to repair the supercharger pulley on my SL55 - it's all under warranty, thank goodness! My name is Ben, and i am a Technician for Mercedes Benz of Eastbourne, and i am offering my services if anyone needs any advice on anything Merc.

Incidentally, do you know where I can get some 200-cell cats at a decent price to replace the 400-cell ones that come as standard - I've heard they restrict exhaust flow tremendously?
Also, anyone know where I can get some 19" style IV alloys at a good price?
And how do i do it, set it up???
Ben
The CLS is probably the best looking Merc for many years, and would certainly be on my shopping list if i wasnt a techy!!
My advice would be go for the 320 V6 diesel, a superb engine, and very quick for what it is, add a Brabus chip ( dealer option ) and you will have an economical quick cruiser. Perhaps with an AMG kit and some 19"s

I'm a mechanic by trade and intend to work on my car myself.
I have a 500E, it is due some new engine mounts as the distance between the top and bottom section of the mounts is now below the minimum distance. I also think it would be prudent to change the timing chain and guides etc.
Now will I see problems by possibly removing the engine to do this, or is removing the rad etc more than enough room?
Also, i've heard the chain can stretch slightly and this then retards the cam timing, is this true?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Dave!
There is no recommended timing change schedule for Mercedes, i personally wouldnt worry about it.I have a 500E, it is due some new engine mounts as the distance between the top and bottom section of the mounts is now below the minimum distance. The chain tensioner will always keep the chain tight, as for the timing retarding with the chain stretching, it may do a small amount but you would never notice it driving the car, they generally just get worn rather than stretch, as im sure you know bieng a mechanic.

Hi Ben.
Thanks for helping out, possibly saving our pennies every now and then.
I have just bought a SLK 320 and have a roof problem.
The guy I bought it from said it was the hook where it connects to the windscreen. The pin was out of line and the hook was catching. He had had it sorted but it had returned. I popped into Merc on my way back from collecting it and they remembered the car and "gave" me 10 mins to adjust it again.
It is now worse...
To open the roof, you wait until the roof is trying to go back and thump the headlining and it works.
Can you tell me if I can do anything or do I need to "book it in" and empty my wallet.
Thank you
Sounds like something is bent or way out of adjustment, you may be able to sort it yourself but it depends how mechanically minded you are!!Thanks for helping out, possibly saving our pennies every now and then.

If your not confident then i would suggest booking it in somewhere.

Nubbin, There's a lever inside the headlamp to fiddle with.
You need to take the back cover off, as if you were going to change a bulb. On the drivers side headlamp, the little lever is at '9 o'clock' as you look into the back of the lamp.
Your owners manual should tell you how to adjust it from there. I think there is a little movable piece just pushes in to narrow the beam, can't say I've done it myself.
Nice car btw, Black over Berry Red looks fantastic on SLs !
Mind your fingers, the levers are'nt that well finished, they can be a bit sharp. You need to take the back cover off, as if you were going to change a bulb. On the drivers side headlamp, the little lever is at '9 o'clock' as you look into the back of the lamp.

Ben, don't know if you missed my question on p2, but here it is again:
I am thinking of getting a used CLK coupe - I have noticed that the S/T reg ones are getting into my price range (around £6k). What do you think of this model? What should I look out for when purchasing? Any known faults? The ones I have seen have around 80/90k miles and FSH - presumably such a car would still have a good few years left? We do around 7k miles a year and usually keep our cars for at least 4 years.
Thanks.
They are not too bad, not my choice but each to their own and all that. The only thing i can advise is to have some savings for when things go wrong, which they will. Dont think cos its a Merc that it will be bombproof, it wont.I am thinking of getting a used CLK coupe - I have noticed that the S/T reg ones are getting into my price range (around £6k). Look for corrosion on the front wings, rear arches and around the boot lock. ESP faults are usually a brake light switch so could be a good bargaining tool. Corroded wheels, noises from the suspension are usually ball joints, anti roll bar links or broken coil springs. Electrical faults are usually expensive, the switchgear is usually pretty sturdy, the problems are with the control units. Check for water ingress into the passenger footwell, thats usually due to a blocked bulkhead drain grommet, this can lead to all the control units in the passenger footwell getting soaked, which is an expensive repair.
Thats about it, sorry if i have scared you off!!

Well done Ben for offering your services - you are to be commended.
I have an Audi R8 on order and I fancy a big (but cheapish MB) to complement it. I was considering a CL for around £20k - should I run a mile
They are generally a good car, just watch for corrosion around rear arches, leaking window seals and SRS faults which are usually a break in the wiring in the drivers door, can be a costly fix. Other than that you should be fine, 215 model CL's are'nt much of a drivers car though.I have an Audi R8 on order and I fancy a big (but cheapish MB) to complement it.
