Which Merc Estate ?

A mate is looking to purchase a Merc Diesel Estate mainly for touring and is looking for some advice.
Would it be best to purchase say a 2005 car with 100,000 miles or a 2003 car with 50,000 miles.
He's been looking for at least a 220.
Any advice welcome regarding pitfalls, which model and year would be best etc.
