never owned an alfa but really like the 147gta. it had mixed reviews in press re:handling. just wondered if anyone actually bought one with their own cash? also are residuals/reliability still major alfa problem? ive seen some on sale for £19k

Have owned a 156GTA for a few months now for what its worth.Fantastic handling and pace, grip is superb but feckin thirsty as hell, only cause its difficult not to peg it! Have driven the 147GTA too (proper long test drive) and found the torque steer too much. With the 156 GTA, traction control does a good job keeping you on the road without interfering. My advice is to test drive both if you can. 147 more of a compromise in practical terms, boot is very small and obviously only three door. Still, its a top looking motor if a little too bonkers and both GTAs sound like nothing better on this planet.

cheers guys. i feared torque steer would be bad on 147, its alot of power for front wheels. do like looks of em, and sounds must be amazing. residuals still a big concern though. whats servicing like?

Not bad, (12k) 170-200 for the first service

2nd (24k) not much more

3rd (36k)quite a bit(About £300 Cambelt check, get it changed anyway)

4th (48k) same as the second

5th (60k) Quite dear, spark plug change (£14 each!)

6th (72k) About £800 cambelt change.

7th (84k) Same as the first

Saying that it is off the top of me heed as I dont book too many GTAs in

I think for the car you are getting, the cost of servicing isnt too bad. The GTAs really do move and I paced a m3 who wasnt holding back and to be quite honest, he didnt get away from me. Im not even going to attempt a debate about a GTA Vs M3, Im simply saying I didnt have too much trouble staying with him.

Anyways, having owned a few alfas over the last few years, including v6's, you should budget for the unexpected servicing costs too. Ive never driven out of an alfa garage having only had to pay the basic service. Theres always other things that need doing.
Front tyres dont tend to last too long on heavy nosed v6 models and you'll probably go through disks and pads quick. Still think its worth it though. Not only are you driving a very fast car, they are also very rare on the road and thats got to be worth something these days.
As for depreciation, thats a fact of life with any car but it can be particularly hard for alfas. The 166 depreciates like nothing ive ever seen before. The GTA's are being produced in limited numbers so that should help somewhat. But being a bit pricey to run and high insurance grade, its going to suffer in depreciation. If you really want one, buy one. Ive never regretted buying any alfa Ive owned, even if some of them have cost quite a bit to keep going. GTA is the best Ive had yet in terms of outright ability, nothing else in the modern alfa range comes anywhere close

cheers. so servicing isnt too bad really when you look at it. as you say tyres, discs/pads will take a hammering. i read somwhere that the 147gta had disk problems and alfa uprated the fronts to 330mm? is this a potential problem. As u say depreciation is an issue on most cars. Didnt realise gtas were limited numbers though, should help.

i have read of disc warping problems on gta's and i THINK there is a recall on this. My car is going fine so I havent done anything about it. GTA line is a limited run, someone else may know of exact numbers. Ive had my GTA 5 months now and have only seen 1 other 156 GTA and one other 147 GTA out there.
My wife has a 147 2L and I would say the driving position is better on the 147.

There is no recall on 147GTA brakes.

If you get a judder, you need to pop it into your dealer, who can put a claim into Fiat once they have tested it.

And even then it is only on certain chassis numbers.

I'm a big fan of the 147 GTA.

Simply put - its rare and its ultra cool.

Would'nt mind one myself - key is to not pay too much for the car and get a bargain.

Depreciation should level off a little ( or at east not fall so fast) so the price you pay now is important.

But if you don't pay top dollar its a great buy IMO.

And the 147 does have a better driving position than the 156 if you are tall.

fair point, list is about 22k i think. the momo leather is a must though which is extra, everything else u need pretty much is standard. ive seen a few used examples for about 19k. id probably stomach the depreciation as long as the car is fun and reliable - had an integrale once and swore never to touch an italian motor again.

integrales are fragile, typical old school italian motor - went like stink, look cool, fell apart.

All GTAs have leather as standard as well as Bose sound system ( i still dont know where the woofer in my car is!). 22k miles not high, alfa v6 is very tough and reliable, its been around a long time so now proven, only real worry could be possible suspension probs if car been mistreated, gta's not been around long enough yet for specific problems to become known. I havent heard of any major issues with the GTA models.
Personally prefer to buy from a garage cause you can tell them to fix stuff before you take like scratches, minor dents, worn tyres etc.

I reckon a nearly new GTA from a dealer with 15% -20% of list would be a nice deal.

So a £22k car for about £18k . Possible?

With a facelift 147 on the way with the same lights as a new 156, if you time it right you should find a dealer willing to deal hard.

There was a 156GTA in a Fiat Special Sale auction a few weeks ago. I'd be amazed if it went for more than £14k. Fiat have these auctions nearly every week, and whilst the lots are mostly bread-and-butter models, the odd GTA or Abarth comes up.
