What do you get, i know what the books says, but what do you really get.

I have:

156 1.6 T-Spark and absolute maximum would be 36.5mpg

Just curious really...

Nope, I get the same in my 2.0 147. Nothing is UP. Your right foot is DOWN.
I can get 35-40 when driving slowly. But that's about once a year.

GTV 3.0 V6. Usually around 18mpg in town, rising to a maximum of about 29mpg with a light foot on a long motorway run.

Sounds cock on.

Trip computer tells me I get 34 average out of the JTD Wagon which is driven in the same style and on the same journeys as my 145QV which gets 23/24ish. 1750 does mid 20's too.

156 2.0 TS - early model.

My wife gets 33 mpg. I get 26. I believe this is due to the patent Alfa Romeo testosterone sensor which magically changes the ECU settings when I get in the car.

When I start getting over 30 mpg, it's time for the Viagra!

I average 21.5mpg in a GT 3.2, but it does a lot of commuting in Nottingham's crappy rush hour, & when it's not in heavy traffic, i just cant help but give it some

Used to get similar on my 147 1.6 TS but my variator has gone recently (Diesel sound for 10 seconds) and I seem to be getting only 26mpg now!
Missing the power surge after 4200rpm too.

It moves the inlet cam timing for more oomph higher up the rev range. Because it is oil driven it is vital to keep your oil topped up and changed regularly.

Nicked from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Rom because it's a Monday morning...

"The Phase Variator, also simply known as the 'Variator', adjusts the angle (or 'phase') of the air intake camshaft to allow the valve open and close time to advance or retard as the engine RPM changes. The angle of adjustment is retarded 25 degrees when energised. The cam runs in an advanced configuration when idling or when the engine is in its high-RPM, full-power state.

The variator's action is controlled by the flow of engine oil into the barrel of the variator device. An electro-mechanical solenoid fitted above the air intake plenum to the rear of the engine controls this flow. The solenoid remains de-energised, or in its 'closed phase', at idle, blocking the flow of oil into the variator. Once the engine RPM rises above idle, the solenoid is energised and oil flows through oil-ducts in the engine head into the variator. This causes the variator to shift its phase through the movement of an internal piston and associated helical teeth.

The variator is de-energised once the engine enters its high-RPM, full power area; that is when its RPM rises above 3500 to 4000 RPM. The camshaft's timing is advanced as a result, and this provides a surge in power."

To be fair, that was a once-only experience in the 5+ years I've had the car

It was cruising across Switzerland at the legal limit the whole way.

thats ok then...
TBH it makes up for it in many other ways.
Which Fuel does yours prefer?
mine seems more torquey with BP Ultimate, but more willing to redline on optimax
