Close ratio box and a long straight? I can imagine bits of Panda being sucked into Tornado engines for years after I turn up. wink

I will be there both days in my Chimaera.....thought we might blag rides with each other. And off the other TVR drivers, the Monaro, the DB7 and the turbo RX7......just to mention a few. And you will be able to spot bits of your car as you ride around.

I might swing by with my camera for PPC. wink

Doubt my Panda will be ready in time for the £999 in July let alone a track day in April. I'm hoping to get to PPC in the Park (Mallory) in May if you and your guys would like to come along to that one as well.

Will certainly have a look at Mallory in May.
RAF only allow those signed up for the track days on the base. I will check to see if we can get you included.

More fun today. The Fantasia ran like the air was made of treacle this evening. Grrrr!

So I found myself under the bonnet again...

..this time using my head light instead of the step ladder stack.

The black crap that was all over the the outside of the carb' was inside the jets as well. I swapped the jests over form the original Fantasia carb' and she's running at about 90%

I'll see if I can find some carb' cleaner to see if that helps.

Hmmmm, carb' cleaner gives you hiccups.

Doesn't make any difference to the car though.

I've found my old MkI 965cc Panda 4x4 carb' in my shed...

...I've adapted the throttle linkage so it will fit the Fantasia cable and made a couple of bolts for it to fit the inlet manifold. I have the magic mushroom filter to see if it works but will need to make an adapter plate to use the original air box.

The 4x4 carb' mounts at a perpendicular angle to the Fantasia one so it's a no go there. While I had the carb off again I noticed emulsion deposited at the bottom of the carb' where the vacuum advance, sump breather and carb' diaphragm ports are. So I cleaned it out before refitting to see if this was causing the vacuum pressure to be low, cleaned all the pipes as well and tested the carb' diaphragm. Again no difference whatsoever. The timing is spot on. The fuel mix is near perfect, the alternator is fine so there's plenty of volts going to the coil to feed the nearly new spark plugs. This is really starting to piss me off and the green Panda Fantasia may soon be extinct.

I've just had the misfortune of driving my sisters Corsa. Driving a car that crap reminds me how good my Panda is so my perseverance is rekindled. smile

Carb' number four for the Fantasia...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-panda-1-0-carb-1987...

...half a carb' at least. Grrrrrr!

I'm seriously considering scrapping the original engine and fitting a fuel injected one as carb' parts are obsolete. frown

I've used the choke and throttle linkage from the scrap Fantasia carb' and given the new one a good clean.

On the red Panda bonnet. What could...

...go...

...wrong?

It's going to be blue eventually anyway. wink

1242cc MPi engine.

Swapped for two spare flywheels. smile

Hopefully that's the oil pump for the FrankenFiat engine and if anyone wants the MPi rail, 1242 block, head or sump (it's had a patch welded to it) let me know. wink

Thanks. It looks as if it's going to come together. Whether it works or not is another thing.

I love these engines. It took forty minutes to strip the MPI engine back to a block and sump, then it took an hour and a half to prize the sump away from the Tiger Seal holding the bloody thing on. I turned the crank a couple of times and as well as having the correct pick up pipe the little oil that was left positively spewed out.

I'd run out of light to fit the newest carb' to the Fantasia but she's not going anywhere in the near future so there's no rush. Three day and three night shifts so the earliest I can get back to it is Wednesday.

If you or if you know anyone who needs or wants any bits they're all on eBay...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/robert060379/m.html?item...

...if not they'll be binned next time I have a clearout. wink

Transition day so I've managed some Pandaing. smile

First I fitted carb' number four to the Fantasia and all went well until I tried to start her. No matter how many times I primed the fuel pump it wouldn't run for more than a couple of seconds. So I added the FrankenFiat pump inline...

...once the new car was full of fuel the old girl started and ran fairly well. So I took the electric pump off and let it run with the mechanical pump and a bit of choke and the as I touched the throttle she bogged again exactly the same as before. So I now have two carb's with the same problem or a knackered fuel pump. When I get a new fuel pump I'll fit a one way valve as well as a new filter so the car isn't starved every time I park on the wonk.

Speaking of the FrankenFiat engine I wanted to fit the new oil pump and get started putting the thing back together. I knew this would happen...

...my plan was to replace the internals from the knackered oil pump with the mechanism from the working one.

Bugger. I forgot the crank ends were different sizes. rolleyes

This means I'll have to either buy a new oil pump (with money I don't have or will have in the foreseeable future) or use the 1242cc block. What I'm going to loose in capacity and torque the finished article should make up for in higher rpm and possibly horse power. The problem is all my calculation for the carb' jetting and inlet manifold length was based on the bigger block. For it to balance out now the manifold needs to be 18mm shorter. This is something I don't need to worry about yet as I have to get the new block together first. As it's an 8V block the cylinders are flat, with the 866 cam' this now means the engine has lost it's non-interference reliability so I need to make certain the belts are properly aligned and fit for purpose. Another irritation as well as stripping the engine at the weekend being futile is the only part of the engine that's been bid on is the thermostat and water pump. Luckily the 1360 one fits and is a lot newer than the one that's for sale. I'll be running the engine without a 'stat anyway.

So this is...

...is as far as I've got today. I may get more done tomorrow if I can. smile

Sorry. After a lot of faffing about with a bigger engine the oil pump won't fit so I'm having to use a smaller one. I'd lose a bit of torque but gain bhp.

I've also recalculated my air/fuel manifold length calculation. Because the 16V cylinders were dished it won't make as much difference I first feared so it should be okay-ish. smile

No, it s my lack of knowledge. I am very impressed with the way you do all this. I have never owned a Panda, though my brother has a 2007 diesel one, and watching you battling your way through it all is fascinating. It tells me to get a proper man in if I need to do anything to the oily bits.

I am presently looking at getting more POWAAAAAAH out of my Chimaera. I have been offered a supercharger and intercooler for about what you would pay for an entire car, but as it will give me an extra 100+ bhp I suppose I will be effectively getting an extra car's worth!

I will bring it round when/if it's all done if you like. Make a change from spanner welding for an hour or so.
