Buying First Classic Alfa - help!
Discussion
Thanks to you guys I think I’m making progress toward a purchase. I’ve been talking to somebody about their car for a while and I think we have a loose deal subject to viewing in late March.
1973, Right Hand drive, 1.6 with 2.0 on webers (plus original engine). LSD, larger front brake kit, respray in 2005, gearbox rebuild. Importantly for me the body seems very good and is a well known car from what I can see. Pricing is strong but I think it’s a great example. 70k miles. On the plus side, it’s also Green over tan which was my #1 choice.
Will keep you updated.
Anybody have any particular view on prices at the moment? There isn’t a huge amount out there. I’ve been watching the car at South Norfolk Motors that just had a price reduction to £18,750- seems nice so I’m interested in pricing. Not worried about future!
I plan to speak with Ian Ellis to sort out an inspection etc when we get to that point.
Thanks to all

Assuming you are talking about a 4-door Giulia (not a GTV), I would estimate values as between £15-25K - the lower for a usable but imperfect car, the higher for something 'condition 1' e.g. structurally/cosmetically/mechanically very good if not a show winner. I am not including basket case restorations or trailer queen concours vehicles in this range obviously. Nor am I including the 'try it on' prices that some high end dealers advertise.1973, Right Hand drive, 1.6 with 2.0 on webers (plus original engine). Value are not decimated either by appropriate modifications e.g. engine swaps etc as 'your' car has received - most Alfisti are quite pragmatic about improvements to performance and handling.
The green car (now just sold I believe) at SN Classics looks nice enough in the photos, but with any of these cars you need to get underneath them with a screwdriver and magnet, as shiny paint can easily distract from shoddy patch welding on the sills and floors and doors/wheel arches full of filler.
Enlisting Ian Ellis to inspect it is a very smart move btw - if you get a good one you won't regret it - happy hunting!
Finally managed to get somewhere near finished on the interior. Seats are great! momo california on order to finish it off.
Took an age, but all the sound deadening removed, painted with rust encapusulator then overcoated with body colour paint with glass crystals, then some homemade 11mm sound deadener/underlay from woolies interiors and finally a carpet set from classic alfa, seats from BF Torino and a set of corbeau 3 point harnesses. Also managed to refurb the grilles, heart etc and fit the new wheels which look ace.
Happy days.
