Fiat 500 Twinair fuel economy

It's not just about the fuel economy re the Abarth. TwinAir purchase price, insurance, road tax are all a lot cheaper and there is no congestion charge for those of us living in central London. All those costs outweigh the fuel argument for me personally. However having said that I am mildly miffed that the mpg is nowhere near the claims. When buying the car I did think I would easily achieve around mid-50's, maybe 60, but generally achieving about 45ish which is way off (after about 3300 miles since new)
Yeah of course there are other factors not just the mpgs, Now if only Abarth would put the body kit in the twinair...Fantuzzi said:
Anyone else heard of a lady in the United states suing honda for the misrepresentation of mpgs.
Surely Fiat are going to get a few complaints? Shame really given that its showing the future of motoring, cars need to get lighter engines need to be smaller (and turbo charged as ford are doing)
Any one run a Abarth 500? The offical fuel figures are in the low 40s, would be odd to think that if this is correct the eco car is harder on the wallet than the range topper!
Our Abarth 500 has averaged 38.7mpg over 21k miles. Highest full tank average has been 50.2mpg and lowest 31.7mpg when driving with 2 bikes on the roof. So within about 10% of the official combined mpg which i think is respectable (previous cars have all done this). Surely Fiat are going to get a few complaints? Some of the twin air mpg reports are quite worrying but i don't think fiat are alone, similar posts in the bmw forums re current crop of claimed ultra efficient diesels. Are manufacturers just getting better at adapting cars for the official test which can't be representative of "real world" driving what ever that is??
Evo magizine long termers/fleet said on the twin air that the gearing was a little out, you had to rev and rev to get anywhere meaning you where always putting your foot down in lower gear than you should be in.
Seems torque is an issue, perhaps a revised mapping is in order for the 2nd gen ones.
Still want a Abarth body kit on it though...

Around 38 mpg if the wife is driving it Although it has only just turned 3000 miles at a year old and so im assuming it will improve with mileage.
I get between 28 and 34 from my Abarth Grande Punto Esseesse - not bad from a little FWD hatch with around 210bhp (yet to be confirmed on a RR).
I agree that the Esseesse is a little rough on a majority of British roads but the other bonuses more than make it worth while.. And when you get her onto a nice flat bit of country road it is absolutely wonderful!

Test drove the Twin Air today and it really impressed me. Doesn't sound great about MPG mind, but it was so much fun to drive!
What sort of deals (if any) are people getting on new cars?
The dealer has said there is nothing that can be done, but I have a feeling that something is possible.
Looking at getting a standard Twin Air with no extras other than red paint which is £290 extra.

I've now done about 4,000 miles from new and the engine is really starting to loosen up nicely, it's a lot of fun to zip around in now. The soft comedy suspension and steering make it a hoot, especially around winding country lanes. It has just the right amount of grip too - it loves to squiggle around on tight bends, but handling is very predictable. Engine and exhaust sound is really great too. Only downside if you can call it that is the mpg hasn't really improved much, still getting around 47-ish (when driven smoothly). Actually the other thing I'm not too keen on is the gearing (but I guess that's related to the mpg issue - it's obviously geared for economy and not speed and acceleration).
