I have a 156 2.4JTD. It is a W Reg, with squillions of miles, it is on its 2nd Turbo and it has a bit of a hesitancy problem.

If you drive it gently it is fine, tourquey, you can feel and Hear the turbo Spooling up. However if you wish to press on a little and put your foot down the umpf builds till about 2800 revs and then sort of peters out, It still accelerates however with a lot less vigure then it was promising with its initial urge.

I wondered if there was something blocking the Airbox and strangling the engine so I pulled the pipe off the airbox and drove it down the road like that to see if it would impove. This made it 10 times worse and amplified the problem greatly. It isn't doing very good mpg at the moment either. Do you think it could be a problem with the ecu cutting the fuel? has anyone else had this problem?

I am a bit stumped and am trying to avoid writing Alfa a Blank cheque to get it sorted.

I need to find a good ALfa specialist in the Basingstoke, Winchester, Andover, Salisbury area does anyone know of any? The Main dealers are not very hot (from my experience of the one in Basingstoke)

Brilliant thanks for that, mine is a w reg so they are a similar age although it has done a fair bit more than 32k miles. It could well be the fuel pump if you really boot it in the first two gears you do get a large(er than normal) puff of black smoke from the exhaust. My understanding is that this is because there is not enough fuel being burnt ie like a fuel cut.

The reason I thought it might be the mangement widget is because when I took the inlet pipe of the airbox it definately cut the fuel then and it felt similar (although worse) to what was happening anyway (it wouldn't cut until the turbo had spooled up)

Edited to say I would guess at it being around 30mpg for mine as well

Buy that man a pint, hurrah.

I think I will be getting them to check the AFM then, I was begining to think that it was likely to be something hugely expensive.

Are Air flow meters expensive? Might be a silly questions (please be gentle this is my first Alfa I always had BMW's before )
