Just bought a 1985 928S at the weekend and it's a marvellous car! I really can't believe you can get so much car for so little money! I can see how easy it would be to lose my licence on this one

Of course, I'm having a few minor teething problems which I'm hoping someone can help me with... for example, does anyone know how to reset the trip mileometer? I'd expect a little black button to press right next to it but can't find a thing...

Also, where's the best place to look for 'small' parts - one of the hydraulic struts on the boot needs replacing, and the plastic grill-type-thing that surrounds the front left set of lights has also perished. They seem a bit too small to merit finding a main dealer, though...

Well done, Geoff - I know the feeling - one of the best bargains in performance car motoring bar, well, none!

I'm just wondering whether an '85 928 wouldn't in fact be an S2 (310 versus 300 bhp?)

The particular snarl of the 4.7 always bettered that of the later 5.0 block and more importantly, was visually akin to an alien ribcage compared to the later cars' less artistic sub-bonnet tubularism.

Hoo-bleedin'-ray!

Congratulations Geoff! I’ve owned my S4 for 6 years now and it has been excellent, although I’m routing to get rid of it now
They really are undervalued!
The trip meter is set by pressing an electronic button (not the usual mechanical stick poking out of the perspex) UNDER moveable binnacle- the one on the left I believe. Your car is very likely the 4.7 litre S2 rather then the S. The S used Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection while the S2 went over to the more efficient LH Jetronic with a mapped “EZK” ignition module rather then the distributor. It’s easy to tell by looking under the bonnet, if the car has an oldstyle single ignition distributor poking out from the front top centre of the engine then it is an earlier 300 Bhp “S”.
The 4.7s 2 valve engines DO sound more rorty then the later cars, even when both have open straight through exhausts, this is partly to do with the exhaust system but also to do with the longer exhaust cams ( it being a 2 valve) and the resultant earelier Exhaust valve opening event which pretty much defines a rorty sounding engine (that’s why inefficient American cars sound SOO good- you’re losing a lot of the energy out of the exhaust as sound and heat!). The later S4s have an interesting if perhaps misguided, to my mind, low speed torque biassed twin plenum variable resonance system to boost torque throughout the rev range.
Look out for a post I intend to do that commemorates the 928 and goes into some technical depth- an engineers view point!

Thanks all - yes, you're all right, it is actually an S2.

Type911 is a great site - thanks for putting me on to them!

But I have to confess ignorance - what on earth is a moveable binnacle? The dictionary tells me it's a "case that supports and protects a ship's compass, located near the helm" which doesn't sound quite right somehow!

I was a bit gobsmacked last weekend when, driving back from picking the car up, I got overtaken by another B-reg gold 928S2 - exactly the same year and colour as mine! I didn't realise I'd bought such a common car...

The part of the dash with the steering wheel and all the usual gauges is adjustable.

Hoooray!

Welcome to 928 ownership mate! Have had mine for a year now and despite a few niggles here and there, it has been fun all the way! Thinking about buying a 928 GT from Germany to turn into a track monster and "beetle" basher

P.S. I hope the 911 boys can take a bit of banter every now and then from the water-cooled brigade (996s excluded)

P.S.1 Try www.928spares.co.uk or call Paul Anderson on 07816668088. Has a huge stock of new and second hand spares at very reasonable prices. Good mechanic too as he owns I think 5 928s...
