944 under-bonnet foam

Does the stuff that was glued to the inside of my bonnet do anything useful?

I only ask because I was cleaning the car last night and I directed the hose at the stuff because it looked a bit grubby and a whole load fell off. Chunks of the stuff are always coming off and sitting on top of the engine as it's 20 years old and pretty powdery so I got a big sheet out and laid it on the engine and washed the rest off - the whole lot just disintegrated using the hose.

So the question comes admitedly a little after the event but do I need to buy some new foam and stick back on to the bonnet or shouldn't I bother?

No you don't need it - the later cars don't have it
