Chaps,

What the point of view on older 911's?

I'm thinking non spoilered, classic shape 911 maybe with the old style fuchs wheels.

The pre 73/74 stuff with the delicate bumpers seem to be pricey. The first safety bumpered 911's seem remarkably cheap.

Our Henry F has a nice one:

www.911virgin.com/3.0ltf.htm

And there is also this one:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=25042&s=79

They seem good value, and surely not likely to lose much money. Insurance is cheap too. I love the stainless steel roll bar and the delicate door mirrors.

For a car to keep for weekends, which makes the right noises and demands to be driven properly, they are very appealing.

I confess to ignorance over 911's from this period.

Whats the story with this era of 911?

Hello toppstuff - any reason why you favour the original impact bumper cars over the later SC and 3.2 Carrera models? I think the bodyshell galvanising was missing from the very early impact bumper cars.

Also, the 3.2 Carrera from 1987 onwards has the improved G50 gearbox.

I used to have one of these - the only car I regret selling.

I like the SC and 3.2 's as well, but so many of them are sports with the spoiler and I just don't like them.

I would be happy with SC or 3.2, but it would have to be a non sport.

I've owned 993 and 996, but I fancy a nice raw weekender for not a lot of money.

I've had enough of finance and I am putting my money into paying down the mortgage, investing for retirement, etc etc

So its cash only depreciation proof Porkers for me from now on !

The mid 70's stuff seems so cheap - and I was wondering why?

I've owned a 86' 911 3.2 Carrera and a 96' 911 (993) Carrera 4.

IMO the earlier cars are fairly raw, mechanically simpler and more fun at lower speeds.

If you're looking for a 911 I'd look for an 80's car either the 3.0 SC or 3.2 Carrera.

The best 3.2 Carrera's are those withthe G50 gearbox from around 86/87 on.

Make sure you get it checked by an expert, oil pipes tend to corrode and need to be replaced and most cars will need/will have had an engine rebuild at some point.

Saying that a good one shouldn't cost you much more than £500 to £1000 p/a to keep in good shape.

I sold my 3.2 to get the 993 and am now looking for a 3.2 again. They are popular as they are great cars.

My 3.2 Carrera was a sport model with front (chin) spoiler and rear (tail). I bought a non-spoilered bootlid for about £350 (took a while to find) and had it sprayed to get the classic look.

Easy to do and the lack of a rear spoiler didn't effect the handling, possibly because the 911 is already heavier at the tail.

Understood. It is entirely possible to replace the bootlid for a non-spoilered verson, which might expand the pool of cars you could choose from. Just another option to consider!

Search the forum use phrases like 'impact bumper' & early 911 etc etc we've discussed this many times.

Personally the sensible money gems for me are-

'74 2.7 Carrera- praciaclly a 73 RS but in not quite such a pretty frock & up to £100k cheaper.

3.0 Carrera, far nicer engine feel & character than an SC.

3.2s (esp CS but that can comand big £) yes G50 box huge improvement over the 915, but 915 cars can be amazing value, rather drive a car with lovely 915 box than a ropey G50 in need of a re-build anyway.

2.7 K jet cars are not the best, slow & pre galavansed cars are very suseptable to tin worm & to restore peoperly will cost pretty much the same as if it was £100k RS lightweight.

Its all dependant on the actual car tho, I dont rate SC's that much, but an ace SC even an early lower power one is a nicer car than a really doggy 3.2.

If you want pre impact then 2.2S is a real gem, 2.4S also but the market knows this & they are hardly cheap

Is that true about the difference in engine feel between 3.0 carrera and 3.0 SC?

Not doubting you, just intrigued. the non SC cars are so much cheaper, in spite of being rarer.

Whats the story?

If you don`t want a rear spoiler on your 3.0 SC or 3.2 Carrera then err.... take it off !

The plastic insert to fit the hole in the bootlid is around £100 from Porsche. You are left with a couple of bolt holes in the bootlid. Weld these up paint the lid and - hey presto a de-spoilered 911.

You could then sell the spoiler off the car along with a pair of your soiled pants or used sports socks on e-bay and that may well cover most of the cost of the job.

Worry more about the base car you`re buying than what, if any spoiler is sitting on the back of the car. You`ll be worrying what CD`s are sitting in the autochanger next !!

Seriously though with all these older (and especially if they are cheaper as well) cars, it comes down to the individual car rather than it`s specific model.

Yip diferent engine feel, similar power but C3 bit more revvy character.

Decent C3 prices normally more than SCs tho, not like somat like old chug chug 2.7 lux's, as David Dickinson would say, cheap as chips!
