Thought the brake pedal wasn't quite as it should be.

Along with a hefty bill for fixing it, I found today when I got the car back from Fernhurst after a service that, while hooning round Folembray on the PH day out last month, I managed to cook my front discs to the point where they were cracked. Dangerous or what?

And the trouble is that they were the special 285mm 'big brake upgrade' rotors from Tower View. So since the 500-sized discs won't fit on my 1995 Chimaera's hubs (Fernies did try, to their credit), Fernhurst had no choice but to fit the tiddly (smaller than the rears) standard front discs.

So it's brake upgrade time again...

tvr fitted 500type brakes to all chimaeras from 95 onwards thats not to say some didnt slip through the net, i have fitted 500 brakes to early griffs the hub is the same, but you need new calipers and spacers otherwise straightforward swap.

Mine definitely uses the earlier, weedy front discs. To be honest, since I still have the adaptors that Tower View used to move the calipers outwards to accommodate the bigger discs, I'll probably buy a new pair of 285mm rotors and can return the machine to the status quo ante for not too much outlay.

WRC Brembo’s are serious kit at a serious price. For mere mortals what rotors are recommended - what are you going to buy Manek?. I am about to order a 285 mm brake upgrade with 4 pot callipers but the suggested rotor is drilled - sound like the ones Manek has just cracked.

I recommend grooved rather than drilled. Drilled discs are notorious for their tendancy to crack. I've suffered this, and so have many others I know. I don't know anybody who has had grooved discs crack. Also don't go for too many holes/grooves. Twenty grooves is more than enough, any more and you are just reducing the pad's effective area for no benefit.

I'm going for a new pair of grooved (not drilled) 285mm discs from Tower View using the same calipers. I'm told they don't crack (er -- the discs, not the calipers). It's cost-effective (read, cheap at £130/pair) and T-V-R can fit them at the same time as they fit my new rollbar and harnesses in a month's time.

Silverstone, here we come!!
