Dead heat?!


Today's Tuscan race got off to a dramatic start with cars flying in all directions. Phil Keen made an ambitious move up the inside of Chris Stockton - returning for a one off bit of fun - and span him around. Caught in the chaos were David Mason and Ben Samuelson, both having to rejoin the field from the back.

Keen managed to stay on track after the incident and roared off into the lead leaving the carnage behind. Lee Caroline followed but a considerable distance behind. He was followed by Hood and Hay.

The race turned into a great chase with Lee Caroline seeking to slash the four second lead of Keen's. Lap after lap he nibbled away at the gap. As if it had been scripted he caught Keen on the final lap. Edging alongside on the final bend Caroline snatched the lead from Keen crossing the line side by side. The timing sheets showed a dead heat down to the last thousandth of a second but the officials ruled that Caroline had crossed the line first and yet again Keen's glory had been stolen by the effervescent Caroline.

Behind them Stockton and Hay battled, swapping places on a few occasions with Stockton finishing ahead to take third. Hay took fourth followed by Dowling, Mason, Holden, Samuelson and Hood.

Sound like an entertaining finish, but I'm puzzled by the decision; if Caroline hadn't actually passed, then shouldn't Keen keep the win?

Back of the envelope says a race car goes about 5cm in 1/1000th of a second @ 100mph; must have some pretty keen eyed officials up there to spot that?

It depends where the transponder is mounted in each car.

I'm told by those on the pit wall that Lee was visibly ahead, if marginally.

Surely that must be in the regs, and if it isn't, why hasn't everyone got one that moves from the back of car to the front during a qualifying lap

I was thinking of holding my transponder in my hand - holding it out of the back at the start of a lap and then stretching forwards at the finish line, sprinter stylee

Then I realised that doing a lap in a Tuscan one handed was above my modest talents
