Diesel 2.5 cutting out after start

I have noticed that the engine has started cuting out after 30 seconds.On the third go it will start and run normal till it has been stopped the the restart is as befor. any help Please.

Hi Just to add It is a Tolbot express 1992 low tec nonturbo.Wouldit be worth changing the fuel filter?When it is running it works well this seems to be a fault at starting.

Sounds like maybe a small leak on a pipe joint or component so diesel drains back and you have air in a pipe on start up and it takes a bit of cranking to suck the fuel back...

Thanks,will take a look at it when the rain stops.will change the fuel filter any way.My problem is that I haven't had much time on diesel engines so need help.
