6 Speed Transverse gearbox power rating
Discussion
Hi,
Looking for some help.
We're looking for a suitable 6 Speed Transverse gearbox/transaxle that is able to cope with 295bhp @ 5200rpm & 450 Nm @ 4100rpm. Redline @ 6000rpm.
The Getrag F40 from GM or Saab 9-3 as it is a compact three shaft, 6 speed. Also perhaps something from Ford- ST170 or ST220 Focus, or Mondeo (not sure of the gearbox code names) or a diesel option perhaps- thoughts please??
Cheers

Some of the Audi 6 speed boxes are capable of transmitting a lot of torque with no issues. They are fitted by a friend to some rather quick Elises, I think one or two make in excess of 350BHP and over 330lb/ft. The early S3 and TT ones I think. ?I can find out more info. if you want.

the ford box in Nobles take good torque... Im running well over 500ftlb through mine (over 600bhp and 8000rpm)
its a unit from the mondeo ST220... buy them for £250 second hand slap a quaife LSD in it and with no other mods will take 400ftlb... i've got oil cooling etc so it holds more torque although im am finding it a limitation as i want 600ftlb (engine can easily make it).

Yep, the venerable VAG 02M gearbox. It's 4WD but VERY easy to change to 2WD by simply unbolting the transfer box and bolting a cover plate and regular CV flange in it's place. Very commonly done to FWD VWs needing a high torque box (VR6 turbos etc).Dave
The 02M can handle 500lb-ft 4WD launches all day long, so would cope with a lot more in 2WD.

Gents,
Thanks for the great info in this. We have a chance of a cheap ST170 6 speed gearbox that we could use to mock-up the layout and machine adaptors for. Can anyone tell me if externally the ST170 and the ST220 6 speed is identical?
No, they are completely different. Thanks for the great info in this. We have a chance of a cheap ST170 6 speed gearbox that we could use to mock-up the layout and machine adaptors for. Can anyone tell me if externally the ST170 and the ST220 6 speed is identical?
The ST170 would not be suitable for the application - too low a torque capacity.
Gents,
Thanks again. The box needs to be transverse. Again back to the ST170 and ST220 boxes, I appreciate the torque capacity of the St170 box would be too low, we were just wondering if the housings were identical? We can get a St170 box as a mock up for a few quid due to internal damage .

They're not identical, they have different bellhousings for starters = the ST170 unit mates to a 2.0L Zetec and the ST220 unit mates to a V6. Thanks again. The box needs to be transverse.
