Ok, hopeing someone can offer some help. I've got the use of a Polo for a few weeks. Unfortuantely it was filthy when I got it. I've given it a good clean inside and out and it's looking a lot better.
I cannot seem to get the glass (outside) really clean though. I expect the car hadn't been cleaned for a LONG time before I got hold of it. Because the windscreen is so manky (even after a couple of efforts with sponger and pressure washer) if it's dark and raining it can really obscure my view.
Any siggestions as to what would remove all the built up grime from the outside of the windshield?
The window wipers also squeak like mad in anything less than torrential rain. I am assuming that's becuase the screen is so dirty and they're not gliding very well. Should I also consider new wipers?
Thanks!

For the squeeking try cleaning the wiper blades with Autoglym Glass cleaner or similar, no point having a clean screen if the wipers are covered in crud.
If you have some glass cleaner give that a go or as said above clay bar or newspaper and vinegar in water solution, old wives idea but works very well, acid in the vinegar cuts through a lot of stubborn muck.

Well I did the screen with newspaper and vinegar. Definitely helped get rid of the grime. I think the problem is actually the glass itself though. Years of not being washed means the wipers have been grinding dirt across the surface leaving neat, wiper shaped patterns! If it were my car I'd probably get a new windscreen but as I've only got it on loan...
Thanks for the help, will definitely come in handy for my own car.
