Hi, does anyone know how to tune for TR6 engine using 45mm Hitachi SU carbs HIF 1977? How to work out needles etc. Or anyone to tune around Derby/ Nottingham area?

Regards.

At a guess, flog them to someone who owns a Datsun, buy a set of HS6s which were used on that engine to start with, bolt them on, pocket the difference and go to the pub for a couple of free pints?

Seems like an awful lot of effort for .55mm of extra venturi diameter; the design of the carburettors is functionally the same (aside from the internal float in the Hitachi, presumably) so I can't see that you'll get a big performance bump unless your current carbs are knackered.

If you want to stick with SU style carbs, HS8s might be a better move?

I hear you dave, but I've bought these and am going to make them work. Any advice OTHER than changing them would be a great help.
Cheers.

Well, given they're about the same size as HS6s, go with the needle that Burlen suggest for HS6s on a TR6 - the BAG. You may well be able to go a little bit richer at higher stations, but that should get you running.

Getting bits for Hitachi carbs is a complete nightmare in the UK, I would recommend sticking with SU HS6s or moving to HS8s from a Jag if you really need more power.
For my Datsun I am currently sorting out getting a carb rebuild kit from www.zcarsource.com in Arizona as nobody in the UK has the needles, jets or float chamber valves.

Yes I had thought of that one, but read in a few places the Hitachi ones are a little better. Seen a few HS8's on ebay but did not want to bore the intakes out on my inlet manifold.
I work in the Mailbox, is your car around there?
Cheers.

My car is currently in Sutton Coldfield, but when the new parts arrive and I can stop fuel pouring out of the rear carb it will return home (Edgbaston).

If you want to offload the Hitachis then I will be interested and if you are seriously thinking about HS8s I may be able to get some for a straight swap.
