Clunking full lock/uneven ground/high speed
Discussion
Hi there,
I've had this problem for over 4 months now, and still it is not fixed. If I go to an empty car park, and apply left full lock and go around in a circle nice and slow I hear a clunking/rattling noise from the right hand front of the car. I can also feel it through the steering wheel and pedals.
I can also feel the clunk at high speed (anything after 70mph). If I put the wheels straight and turn the steering wheel side to side I can hear the clunking noise then, when stationary from the right hand wheel. I can also replicate the clunking if I go off road or really slow on a bumpy uneven road surface. The problem is no existant after 15mph (until we get to 70mph) It's had a new ball joint, anti roll bar links and tie rods. Nobody seems to be able to identify this problem. If anyone can help, it'll be brilliant!

Assuming all suspension items are in good order & everything steering & suspension wise is secure & nothing is loose, my suspicion would fall on the CV joint. Clicking/clunking when moving with steering turned is often the way they reveal themselves. Usually the noise stops when in a straight line. I am slightly puzzled by it doing it when stationary.
Did once have a problem with a 306 1.6 which also clicked when going in straight line as well as turning, the clicking speeded up & slowed down with road speed. That one turned out to be a worn out gearbox bearing - the hardening had worn through on the outer track of the bearing.

Not sure if just the shaft and as it was the left side it dumped the gear box oil so I had to pay for that to.
I called into my local indi for them to take a look and they did it that very afternoon for £140 including VAT.
Mine only made the slightest clonk when stationary so you may have another issue there but as soon as I drove straight in the snow, hit bumpy surface or turned full lock the knocking noise was really bad.
It's fine now.

Ah I see! It sounds like my wheels falling off though when I'm coming down a road that's a little bumpy/uneven and I'm about to pullover. You can't hear it from outside though, with window down. You can feel it though, through the steering/wheel pedals. If it is the drive shaft, is that why it's so hard to diagnose? Loads of mechancs have had it and they've all said it's fine, nothing wrong. One has said theeres play in the steering rack (but to leave it to see if it gets really bad) which I was kinda leaning towards. Then I thought about the CV joint as it happens when on full lock, but not all the time. It's had new tie rods though, which my mechanic said was when the 'steering rack was nackered'
If I do a full circle, nice and slowly on full lock it'll hapen twice in that circle. One about 11 o clock, one about 4 o clock. It'll do 3 clunks at 11 o clock and 3 at 4 o clock.
