Hello
Cambelt broke on the Clio. '95 model, 8 valve SOHC 1171cc, 9.25cr.
Just wondering if there will have been clash between pistons and valves (is it an interference engine)?
With the value of the car, I'd obviously be doing it myself. But is it worth the bother, or will the engine be trashed anyway? There isn't any (loud) metallic tapping when the engine is turned.
Thanks for any advice.

Oh dear, signs were good - no obvious damage to the top end, cam turning, tappet clearance visibly ok.
However lots of oil in the pulley housing, covering belt, etc. Maybe coming from rocker cover gasket. Anyway, cleaned it all up, fitted new belt and tensioner, water pump turning freely. All timing marks aligned, tension ok. Went to turn over, no horrible noises but nothing. Checked compression - only a reading on cylinder 4, nothing on the others. Could I have taken out valves / pistons on first 3 pots? Have I missed something obvious? Otherwise it's weigh-in time. Thanks

I had a 94 Clio 1.2 which broke the belt and did bend a couple of valves. Iirc they were only a few quid each though. Also w.r.t the oil leak one of the bolts through the timing cover went through to an oil drain from the head on mine, guess which bolt I lost...

Yes thats a interference engine so some valves will be bent. Im just im the process of removing a head on a 2006 Hyundai SantaFa 2.2 CDTI. For some reason the cambelt has jumped 10 teeth turning on the can sensor light. The engine is now spinning round with no compression this is going to be expensive repair as there break rockers and bend valves !

My D7F bent 6 or 7 valves when the cambelt went.
A couple of quid each? Not even close. If I remember correctly inlet valves were just under £10 each and exhaust just under £20.

Well the lesson clearly is do your cam belt checks and changes regularly!
I'd put mine off as the MOT was looming, and it just scraped by last time (getting pretty rusty)...
If it hadn't been a shed, I be a lot more peeved.
