Hi

Need some advice. I have a little ford ka 03. It recently had its mot and it got an advisory for corrosion on offside sill. It's on the door frame basically. I knew it was there and have been thinking about ways that I can deal with it. There is one patch where the paint has come away and then there a few bubbles about half way along the car towards the middle. Not question is whether there is anything that I can do to treat this as cant really afford to just give up my car at the moment so that isn't an option. Would it be best for me to get it done by a body shop or is it something that I can do? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Also it says on the mot that it was not deemed excessive, but at what point does it get to be excessive? Presumably it could fail its mot on this.

Many thanks

Please do not do it yourself!

Where abouts are you based? Might be able to suggest someone.. Ideally this needs properly cutting out and treating to prevent the rust from coming back or you can have it sanded and bodged with filler for a quick fix if you are not planning on keeping the car for a whole lot longer.

are you sure the mot wasn't referring to the "inner" sill?

All it says on my MOT is corrosion on offside sill not deemed excessive. The rust that i can see is on the outside of the car.

Its generally the jacking points that go, ie inner sill, may be worth an ask of your MOT station as bodywork isn't deemed an mot fail unless its either structural or unsafe to pedestrians in the event of an accident.

I had a '97 Ka and it was rusty around the sill and bottom of the door from pretty much new. It needed quite a lot of welding before it went...

Pictures may help here but I think you will need to take it to a bodyshop or garage for them to have a proper look and poke around. The length of time you want to keep the car and how bad an appearance you can put up with will determine what you do. A ten year old Ka will not be worth much though so I would only be looking at what would have to be treated and welded to get through an MOT.
