Chamberlain powers to victory

Castle Combe sees another win for dominant Porsche 935

A mid-race downpour and safety car period failed to disrupt the rhythm of Richard Chamberlain who took his Porsche 935 to victory number nine in the Michelin Porsche Open Series at Castle Combe on Saturday (2 October).

As ever, Chamberlain's closest challenge came from the 996 GT2R of Rupert Lewin, who, after being slow to come to terms with the damp conditions in qualifying eventually got to within 2.5s of Chamberlain's best lap of 1m 16.224s. Wayne Jackson's Class 3 944 Turbo was third fastest, just ahead of the first Class 2 car of Henry Firman (911 GT3 Cup) and the top Class 4 machine of Tim Bevan (944).

The race started on a dry circuit with Chamberlain and Lewin as expected pulling away from the field on the very first lap. Gradually Chamberlain got away but first came the drizzle, and then heavier rain, meaning that the safety car was introduced on the eighth lap to minimise the potential for an accident with cars running on slick tyres.

Five laps later racing resumed and over the remaining ten laps Chamberlain amassed a lead of 16s over his rival. "It was like having two races in one," he commented at the end of the race. "The only problem I had was that my visor kept falling down - I couldn't see where I was going!"

Despite his defeat, Lewin had enjoyed the challenge. "The change in conditions made it that bit more exciting," he recalled.

The rest of the field finished at least two laps down on the flying lead pair. Firman beat Paul Hogan (996 Turbo) by almost a full circuit on his way to Class 2 honours, while Jackson defeated the 914-6 of Paul Herbert in Class 3 and Bevan claimed Class.4 spoils.

Results - 22 laps:
1 Richard Chamberlain (935) 31m 05.480s (78.54mph); 2 Rupert Lewin (996 GT2R) 31m 21.515s; 3 Henry Firman (911 GT3 Cup); 4 Tim Bevan (944); 5 Paul Hogan (996 Turbo); 6 Wayne Jackson (944 Turbo). Class winners: Chamberlain; Firman; Jackson; Bevan. Fastest lap: Chamberlain 1m09.162s (96.29mph).

The Michelin Porsche Open Series now moves to Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend of 9/10 October.

Yes but if we are talking about "obvious" a GT3 cup car should whip the arse of off a 944 turbo!
