So, no underhand double-dealing at all then.
It's actually more entertaining then F1!

You couldn't make it up (unless your name was Bernie).

"Former world champion Nigel Mansell is involved in a consortium hoping to save the British GP, it has been revealed.

Mansell has joined forces with a company set up to help promote the race and improve facilities at Silverstone.

"For drivers Silverstone is one of the best circuits in the world," said Mansell, the winner of 31 Grands Prix.

"But some of the facilities are not as good as those at new, government-funded circuits like Shanghai. We are going to rectify this."

The company, Brand Synergy Ltd, is headed by motor-racing entrepreneur Kim Cockburn, former British Touring Car champion Robb Gravett, and David Phipps, who has worked in F1 for over 40 years. "

Surely a proper business set up can play Bernie at his own game - Good Luck to them if they can!

This has probably been asked before but, why can't our govt fund the damn thing, we manage to build new footy stadiums, pointless big tents in London etc

Because huge swathes of the population think twenty two academic underachievers kicking an inflated pigs bladder around and hitting one another is fine entertainment...

..and a tiny fraction of us think watching a bunch of chaps pointlessly burn petrol by going round and round in circles is top fun...

Not only that but Motorsport is decidely "not green".

And after all we must remember that "cars are bad". Even racing cars it seems...

The government would install scamera's along the Hanger Straight and catch the F1 boys, just like do with the rally drivers in Wales.

Yeah but only for Bernie... I'm sure the BRDC would have found the cash from somewhere (proceeds of this years race for example) if the could get any sort of return on it.

They don't do badly. Mrs. L. used to marshall there, and claimed that the GP effetively paid for all the other events, which is why you don't see oodles of advertising in non specialist media like Rockingham does.

The BRDC weren't promoter of this years race that was Octagon/Interpublic or whichever subsidiary was in charge at the time.

In the old days the GP was a bit of a cash cow, until the wet GP when the BRDC realised that the potential risk weighed against the return was perhaps something they (as a not for profit co) couldn't take. The contract now is (AFAIK) based on the wonderful deal struck between Brands Hatch Leisure and BCE at a price that nobody else wanted to pay so I really don't think the bucks are there.

Well, the Government just took 3.5mill off some drug dealer languishing in a Dutch jail that they weren't expecting. They could bung that in Silverstone's direction - that way, the tax payer wouldn't be paying for it.

Piglet, Liszt,

The GP was never a 'cash cow' and it didn't pay for the other events.

I was looking back through the BRDC accounts last night (for other info), and I can promise you the GP was a loss-maker before Interpublic took the lease of the circuit.

Bernie's fee was too high even in the pre-Foulston era (when it doubled) thanks to the lack of all TV and trackside advertising revenue.

Is it me or is this quote the most worring?

"By redesigning the circuit they could release large parts of land which could be released for industry."

Agreed. We must not sponsor the little runt in my opinion.

Personally, I hope it doesn't get sorted. It's over-hyped, over-priced and over here.

F1 is the most boring motorsport I've seen this year, and I haven't paid more than a tenner for a day's racing all year.

The only exception is Le Mans which cost about less that £200 quid.

Why would I want F1 cluttering up Silverstone at £150-200 for four races?

So to my mind if the brdc cannot make money and indeed risk their existance by running it, should they let it pass... motor racing is bigger than one man opps i mean race...
