My Jaguar X308 XJR came to me fitted with a very loud and rather expensive stainless steel cat-back by Paramount Performance.

It's just too loud (my wife says she can hear me pull away from traffic lights about half a mile from our house) but given its cost and the standard Jaguar system sounds like a Toyota Pri*s, I've been wondering about modifying it.

Each branch coming from the shared centre box is fitted with two very narrow diameter silencers; would replacing one or both with a larger diameter one be a practical possibility - like this one from eBay?

Welding in additional boxes will make it quieter but if the system that's on there is valuable I'd steer clear of a £37 box on eBay, get to a proper fabricator and have it done with quality components to go with what is already on there.

Why not contact Paramount .. I'm sure they would be able to do a proper solution.

Whilst in general ebay does sell dung

I bought a stainless silencer from this place a while back for my van

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of it. It didnt even look like the cheap piece of crap they had in the photo on egay.
I wouldnt hesitate to buy from them again.

Do you know what exhaust you actually have, and if there are any quieter options ?

I spoke to Paramount and they weren't overwhelmingly helpful.

I'm looking for a cheap solution as the car has descended into bangerdom and I'm skint!

Brother-in-law handy with a welder and will probably give it try and if it doesn't work, there are many second hand systems available.

I expect your problem is made worse by the exhaust system resonating (at the perfect frequency) to significantly amplify the noise output?

You have to change the resonating frequency to minimise the noise.

Here is my DIY exhaust baffle for Rover V8 S/S Exhaust made from 2 3" steel washers welded to 6" of 2" dia steel tube with 10mm fixing nut welded to one end to fix in tailpipe. Saw/Grind cut-outs to tune system for minimum resonance and optimum gas flow.

Works great!

Alternatively

A commercial exhaust baffle that can be inserted into any pipe of the system for noise reduction. Not so cheap and probably more difficult to tune than a cheap DIY version.

Google "exhaust baffle inserts" or similar for different types.

There are other ways of modifying noise, read my comprehensive review about V8 exhaust systems in PDF form from this link

Pick one from the seller I posted, they have many shapes and sizes and wont break the bank.

Basically fit the biggest one you can

I remember my father back in the 1960s had a loud motor bike, it was either a BSA or a Norton. He reduced the noise by putting a wire pot-scrubber up the tail-pipe. hehe

Baffles and pot scourers will work but ruin performance
Just put two big silencers in
You don't need to weld you can just use exhaust clamps
Cut original pipe
Cut slots in silencer end pipes

cheap solution ...see if anyone on a owners forum has something to swap plus cash ..even a standard system then swap out the backboxes when you have some funds or see something suitable
