Hi all,

I'm in the process of buying a car with a s**ty private plate! It's a 2008 car and the reg reads ##54 JAN so looks like a normal 54 plate car hence the previous owner leaving it on the car!

My question is will there be any fees to simply surrender the plate if I can do such a thing? I just want the car back to the original reg and I don't wish to keep the 'private' reg.

Thanks in advance smile

If it's being left on then to remove it costs £80.and car should return to original reg....although not a guarantee.

To put the reg on retention will cost I think 1yr 105 2yrs 120 ...all can be found on the dvla site about registrations. It's a form v317 iirc to remove it.

Provided it's a paid for plate DVLA will remove it for no charge and return it to it's original plate or a n other age related plate

Well - one of you is probably right. PH strikes again. Extra points to R36vw for posting it twice, though!

So it'll cost £80 to bin the plate? I'm not interested in putting it on retention or transferring it.

To surrender a vehicle registration number the vehicle keeper will need to apply to:

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1DS

The request will need to include:

• V5C vehicle Registration Certificate

• MOT certificate

• serial number and expiry date from the tax disc

• a letter from the keeper stating that they wish to surrender the plate

If the vehicle is not yet registered in the new keepers name they will need to include a letter of consent from the previous keeper confirming that they do not want to keep the number.

Please note once the request to surrender the number has been approved no facility exists for it to be re-issued or bought back.

The applicant should receive a confirmation letter with the new MOT Certificate and tax disc within 2 weeks of a successful application being received at the DVLA Swansea.

The DVLA will allocate a replacement vehicle registration number to the vehicle. This will normally be the previous registration number of the vehicle. However, if the previous number cannot be returned another age-related number will be issued.

Applicants will receive a new V5C within 6 weeks.

No probs - kills the topic dead - last time we had the same subjet it was 60 posts of people debating vanity plates between telling the OP his options were £100 to put in retention or put up with the plate

And that I and a few others was talking rubbish - of course DVLA would make a charge ;-)
