David Coulthard should admit his chance has gone and walk away from F1, according to Eddie Irvine.

The former Ferrari driver says he finds it “staggering” that Coulthard is still touting his services to teams – despite the fact that most top drives have already been filled.

Irvine told The Sun: “David never won the world title and never will. He always had a top car but was never quick enough.

“I find it staggering he is prepared to hawk himself around. He should realise his time in Formula 1 is over, walk away and concentrate on getting on with his life.”

Coulthard appears to be out of the running for the remaining drive at Williams, with Antonio Pizzonia, Nick Heidfeld and Anthony Davidson all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz said earlier this week that his team was not interested in the Scot, leaving just Jordan and Minardi with available drives.

Coulthard has admitted he would consider a testing role next year with a view to returning to a race seat in 2006.

David Coulthard is still in the running for a drive at Red Bull Racing.

Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz appeared to have ruled Coulthard out of the reckoning last week.

But the Austrian has now backtracked on that claim by suggesting that he wants to recruit at least one experienced driver rather than gambling on two rookies.

He told Reuters: "Among the experienced drivers with 'development know-how', David Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld would be of interest, for example.”

However, Mateschitz still seems determined to offer a drive to Christian Klien. The Austrian driver was quick but erratic in his debut season with Jaguar last year.

Mateschitz said: "It's no accident that people talk about the first year in Formula 1 as being a learning year. Afterwards a driver has to prove himself.

"From that point of view, Christian Klien should get his chance, but he has to prove himself in a series of tests -- just like Vitantonio Liuzzi, who impressively won the Formula 3000 championship as a Red Bull junior driver.

Looks to me as if DC is out of a drive altogether next year. Shame really, I'd have like to seen him move to someone like Minardi or similar and boost their team - no matter what you say about DC, his ability to test/set up/develop a car must be better than most.
