Hi guys,

As we all sit here and ponder what has happened to F1 and hope that something interesting may happen next year (somebody other than a Ferrari might win...), lets just remind our selves how it used to be... check this out - Villeneuve vs Arnoux at the French GP - fantastic stuff!!

Enjoy

Really disappointing that this version has music instead of the cars' engine notes and Murray Walker's commentary.

I have a version that does, but it is a really crappy low bandwidth version. I was really hoping that this version was a higher-res version of what I had.

Still, I agree - totally amazing racing.

Bloody marvellous! Shame about the music, the screaming v12 vs v10 (I think) would have been preferable. Still an example of how it should be. Thanks for posting

Yeah - forgot to mention the crappy music (it's not mine) - still fantastic though.

Anyone got the 'proper version' ???

Try this version with engines and Murray Walker - but apologies for the crappy quality.

If we could just combine the audio of the version I have with the video that woody posted then we'd be sorted

3 litre Flat 12 normally aspirated engine in the Ferrari and the Renault had a 1.5 litre V6 engine.

While I wholly agree that is a FANTASTIC banter (I have't downloaded it but I know the one you mean)....do remember that is regarded as one of the best duels of all time.

What does slightly frustrate me is that it should not be sent around as though all F1 racing of that era was like it. Yes, it was very different racing, but that episode was a one off and as such should not be likened to ALL of modern F1.
We've had some good battles (albeit not as obvious) in the modern era, though I will agree that F1 could be more entertaining for us petrolheads for sure.

Sorry to change the tone of the thread there, but I guess you all see what I mean!!

Taking nothing away from the fact that is a TOP sequence!! Bravo!

Crikey that was exciting even with the tunes, think that just shows how dull Formula Boring really is.

Flat 12 Vs V6

I remember this from when it was live , what an example of two Warriors going for it .

If they raced like that today they would probably get banned or a stop go penalty

Senna Vs Alesi at Phoenix 1990 for the US GP is a more recent example of great racing and overtaking between 2 drivers.

awesome. Total respect and trust between the pair of them, which is something I feel is lacking in F1 today. Don't get me wrong, I love F1, but something is missing at the moment. It's getting so they may as well christen it "The Herman Tilke world champoinship for racing cars racing on circuits designed by Herman Tilke". Why oh why can't we have circuits with a bit of character (Spa, Monza, Montreal etc excpted). Bahrain, Shanghai, Sepang, are all the same.

Here you go, please right click the link and "Save as" thanks, don't stream it. It was only 2 laps but you'd be hard pressed to find this in any recent races.

Alesi in the Blue/White Tyrrell-Ford, Senna in the McLaren-Honda. First year of all normally Aspirated 3.5 litre engines and the Tyrrell introduced the high nose concept.

And excuse the over-enthusiatic Brazilian commentry

Hang on I'll re-upload it. (Bloody servers) it kept losing the server and with the PH pages loading slowly I think it got all confused.

Sorted now.

Don't think that the Battle of Dijon was typical of all F1 races in 1979. However, the driving was more spirited in those days. And those engines weren't much in the way of "screamers" - 10,000 to 12,000 rpm rather than the current 18,000 rpm.

Finally, the Murray Walker commentary on this particular race is not that brilliant because it was added after the event. In those days, the Beeb did not send Murray to all the overseas races. He often commentated by sitting down in the studio in London looking at the live feed. Sometimes, he watched the live feed and then added a commentary to the cut down highlight version, which BBC 2 would show between 9.30 and 11.30 later that Sunday evening. That's what was done with the 1979 French GP. So it does lack spontanaeity.
