Hi Everyone,

I'm wanting to do a full flush and change of the coolant on my 944, as it seems to be running a bit hot, but I can't seem to find what sort of anti-freeze to use - I'd heard you have to use a phosphate-free to avoid damaging the aluminium radiator, but would be most grateful if someone could tell me what brands are Porsche Approved?

I have always used normal stuff on my 944's. Never caused a problem. In fact I have just refilled my coolant system with said stuff...

Euro car parts are the best option...I picked up genuine filters last week, £4.00 oil, £6.00 air....Even say porsche on them....

Cheers for the tip - I'll be doing a full filters/fluids etc change ASAP, so I'll get those on order tommorrow.

Don't suppose you know the oil and coolant capacity for the 2.5 Lux do you?

ummmm. I tend to suck it and see really.
I filled mine up with just under 5 litres of oil yesterday. The oil topped up to just under the maximum line.

Coolant, well, difficult to say, I filled a watering can full of antifreeze, topped it up, ran the car squeezing hoses, eventually all of the air bubbles filtered out, so can't really tell. You will be ok if you buy a 5l container, dilute it, and do what I did. They are sneaky little badgers though, just when you think it is full, out pop a load of bubbles, down goes the fluid, and top up time again.

If you are draining it from the bottom offside hose, make sure you put a new jubilee clip on. Just a tip, it won't seal properly otherwise.

The oil capacity is supposed to be 6.5l I think. I changed mine a week ago and jacked up the passenger side a bit so the majority of the bottom of the sump is higher than the drain plug and you'll get more oil out. I used the whole of one 4.5l oil container and quite a bit from the second one to take it up to max on the dipstick.

If you haven't changed the oil on a 944 before there's a big gotcha that alex (iguana) pointed out to me after the event sadly. The filter is high up on the engine and screws down onto the filter housing. If it's a good filter it should have a non-return valve in it and if you drain the engine oil out and then unscrew the filter the entire contents of the filter will flow down the side of your engine and all over the floor and a lot of it will sit in the under engine bay tray. What you need to do it puncture the top of the filter with a small screw driver before you remove the sump plug and then most of the oil will drain out. Before you do this remove the under engine bay tray as it's easier to do that than try to remove it when it's full of oil. Get some sand in to soak up the oil you do spill and don't attempt to drain into a 'proper' drain tank/tray but get a deep washing up bowl as the oil comes out at a hell of a rate even without the filler cap removed because you punched the holes in the filter.

The first time I did it I had to remove the under engine tray with what looked like all 6l of oil sitting in it and oil coming out of the slats and oil all over the floor and the second time resulted in me cursing and demolishing my oil drainer plastic can and mopping about 5l of oil up off the floor with sand. Third time lucky
