Sid Watkins to retire from F1

Just seen this on the BBC website.
Suppose it had to happen sometime, but it's a shame one of the few people everyone seems to respect is standing down.

The 76-year-old, known as 'Prof', will be replaced by his assistant Gary Hartstein, an associate professor of anaesthesiology and emergency medicine. Max Mosley, president of motorsport's governing body the FIA said: "Sid has made a unique contribution to improving safety throughout motorsport." Watkins will become president of the new Institute for Motor Sport Safety.

it really is a shame. although hopefully he might get cracking on his autobiograhy.

If you havnt read his books then you've missed out, i thought the first one was a brilliant read. A very clever, sensible and funny man, who believes all racing drivers are a bit dim. anecdotes ahoy!

Messrs Watkins and Whiting are possibly the only two "gentlemen" left in F1. Always a pleasant word for even the lowest of the low on the F1 circus (i.e. me)
