On my fuel sender unit is says "SW - USA". I found out that this is probably from Stewart Warner.

Does anyone have any experience using this $25 unit as an alternative? Sender

looks like that is secured with a ring of screws rather than the locking ring used on the S ?

I am sure I have seen the screw arrangement, as opposed to the landrover lock ring, on some S variants, but cannot recall if they are the early or late models.

Here's a pic of mine. This is a lock ring secured fuel sender.
The 5 holes are there, but are filled with some small pieces of plastic.

My S1 has the same SW (believe to be Stewart Warner)standard 5 hole Standard American Engineering fitting. Except mine has 5 machine screws with fibre washers which screw into the tank and a neoprener gasket to seal the main mating flanges.

I did a load of work some years ago to get a replacement but failed miserably. Although I could get the resistance range, I could not get a 'side mounted' sender from anywhere. ie mounted into the side of the tank. The one on the link you sent is a top mounted sender, which are quite common and available in this country. It's confusing as they quote 'side' in their text but this is because (due to the five hole flange) they are left handed or right handed.

I did buy a couple to try and adapt many years ago without being too successful and SW were particularly unhelpful if I recall. I think I resigned myself to blanking the hole at some point and fitting a new one in the top. One day......

It won't fit. It goes in the top of the tank not the side. It sounds like you have a later tank (with the locking ring) wbich someone has bodged the early sender into. Check the search engine because I think the sender you really need is still available.there were three types fitted over the years one of which was standard Land rover.

Thanks for the input. That's good to know. My sender is working OK at the moment and I was just looking around for a potential future replacement. I thought this might work. Anyway, I'll have a search for the Landrover item which you mentioned.

Any ideas on whether this one would work?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-MIDGET-MkIII-MIDGET-1...

Presumably I'd need to take an earth off the tank or solder a tab on to the sender unit?

The advantage of this one is that the float arm doesn't extend very far into the tank, I have baffles in mine.

Anyone got a secondhand one knocking around I could experiment with?

Maybe you should ask for some dimensions. What is the diameter of the round plate and seal ring ?
Or, are they standard ?
