So here it is, a 1998 Series 2 106 Rallye. 92000 miles, 7 previous owners and a service history that stops in 2009. The 4th French hatchback of my driving life, and the second 106, although the last one was a diesel.
I started keeping an eye out early last year, specifically for an unmodified blue S2. It soon became apparent that unmodified ones are not that common, so I just kept an eye on the usual websites, and finally came across this one on carandclassic in October. The only problem at this point was that I was sat in the Pullman Hotel in Abidjan. Fortunately, this didn’t seem to bother the seller too much, so I took a punt and made an offer that was accepted, and managed to transfer the funds, arrange tax and insurance, all from Cote d’Ivoire - try doing that in the days before the Internet!
The car was 200 miles from my home, but near a friend of mine who went and picked it up. He dropped me a mail telling me the car seemed pretty good, and that he’d got it parked in a lockup.
Roll on 4 months, to Sunday just gone, and I was finally able to jump on the train and collect it. Quick check of the oil level - hmmmm, no dipstick (is there a trick to check the level without a dipstick?), and last documented cam belt change in 2009…….. Anyway, took pot luck and drove it home, avoiding lots of revs and a heavy right foot (memories of a cam belt snapping on a Lancia Beta many years ago still vivid). The M1 was pretty boring, but the Fosse Way was clear and rather enjoyable. The car has more torque than I had expected, certainly more pull than my 1.6 Fulvia, and the steering is lovely compared to the Golf R dog carrier.
The only thing I’m not sure about is the pugsport exhaust. It’s rather boomy, but it is also brand new. I have the oem one as well, but that’s in a sorry state. Ideally I’d like a stainless oem replacement - any suggestions?
Gave it a wash and a once over yesterday. I had already anticipated the cam belt change, but there are a few jobs that need doing in short order;
Cam belt
Water pump change
Alternator belt change
New discs and pads on the front (not checked the rear yet)
Brake fluid change
New wipers
New tyres (it’s got Nankings plus something else on at the moment)
Investigate the lumpy idle (paperwork shows a new MAP sensor fitted last year)
But I’m writing this and doing none of that because it’s raining, and this car is not high enough up the pecking order to get a space in the garage.

Lovely car and getting rare now. That square black thing in the engine bay I believe is just a suppressor to reduce interference, could be causing the rough idle?

I got one of these early last year so happy to see someone else on here with one. I may need to do a readers thread too.
I am a member on the Rallye forum its alright but their facebook page gets far more traffic.
Mine was 100% standard but the brakes were poor so for I was going to change the pads, discs, lines and fluid. But for very little extra I also got some 206 GTI (130bhp) calipers and the brakes are far better and they are the largest brakes that fit behind the standard 14" steelies.
I also did the belts, waterpump, service etc. changed the rear axle and shocks.
They do idle a bit rough, like pop a bit out the exhaust. There are youtube videos that will show it too.
Hope you enjoy, I find it horrible on the motorway but it is just so much fun on the small back roads we have around Scotland.

Had mine 13 years and currently dry stored as lack of garage space at my home dictates I can't use her. Find her a nice dry home as she'll be getting a bit rusty in all the usual places (inner front wings, front of outer chassis legs/jacking points, boot seams / inner rear arch seams) by now.

Oil check is possible without the dipstick, switch the ignition on to II, then check the oil temp gauge - that gives you the oil level according to a sensor at the front of the block. Cam cover gasket is extremely common on these, and a doddle to do - watch out for the bolts that hold the cover on, they really do just need nipping up, if you snap them they're no longer available! (I bought the last 3 from Peugeot 5 years ago)
That bit of electrickery (as noted above) is the noise suppressor for the coil - lots of people remove/accidentally snap these off and don't notice a difference, so it won't solve your poor running. Generally I'd look at lambda sensor, crank sensor and ICV in that order.
Congrats btw; I know you wanted as original a car as possible, but one mod I would do again without hesitation is fitting the Quaife quick rack which was done specially - it reduces the ratio down to nearly the PAS level and really brings it alive.
p.s. I'm on my 2nd now, but I rebuilt pretty much everything of my first.

Snap...Another S2 indigo owner here, picked up late last year to replace my Mk1 MX-5, so i'm a new boy.
Mine one is pretty standard as well apart from a scorpion exhaust and somebody bodging a cone filter onto the bottom of the air box lid (if anybody has a standard airbox going I've got money waiting...)
My one idles pretty rough as well around 1000rpm, although in all the wet weather it stopped idling at all for a few days which was interesting in traffic...
Also, oil is leaking from the top of the rocker cover so a new gasket is on order.
Loving the 106, its laugh out loud fun...

The lumpy idle can be caused by the missing dipstick on Bosch Fuel injection systems back then. As un-metered air enters the combustion process through the dipstick hole via the engine breather pipes. Plugging the hole with your finger may show this up.
Same problem can come from lots of oil leaks - oil can go out, air can get in.
Used to get this issue on 205/309GTi's back in the day and other Bosch Fuel injected vehicles.

I'm also another S2 Indigo owner, took me about 2 years to find an original one. I also found my car on car and classic, I swear by the pug sport, give it some time to settle. On a motorway run its only boomy between 55-75 in fifth, so you can either drive quietly for economy or drive for speed!

The winter hasn't been kind to it unfortunately, thanks to it being outside and water getting into the sunroof.
In any case, just about to start the job of getting it cleaned up so that I can enjoy it in the spring!

The idle should be a bit lumpy, but it should smooth out as the revs climb. It shouldn't be likena bag of spanners, but they are lumpy and 'cammy' until you get rolling.
I used to have an Indigo S2 and I loved it. I've never known another car have such tremendous feedback. The handling was truly incredible, the sort of thing that just doesn't seem possible in a hatchback! It was so adjustable on the throttle too. What a fantastic car it was. Charging over the B roads of Northumberland, you'll only have more fun on a motorbike...

I have to admit I'm 38yrs old and out of all the vehicles outside my door to choose from (6) Its the rallye I jump into every time.
Owned mine for 5yrs now - longer than any other car... Ever, such a rewarding responsive car to drive.
Mine is a bit modified though.... 158bhp and still an 8v

How have you added so much power?
Lots and lots of money....
Good head work mated to a good cam on a recently rebuilt bottom end (standard) With throttle bodies management and a lot of rolling road time getting the map right.
158.1 @ 8200rpm and was still going but set limiter at 8k for safety's sake and peak power wasn't my main objective, Its all in the delivery.
Still got live with rattly tappety noises at low revs and at idle despite it all being new.
Good head work mated to a good cam on a recently rebuilt bottom end (standard) With throttle bodies management and a lot of rolling road time getting the map right.
