996 engine number ??

Dear all can someone tell me where to look on my 1998 996 I need to confirm my engine number and I cant seem to find it.

look at the windscreen from the side of the car and you will see it at the bottom on one side ( i think passenger but not sure)it looks as though a bit of the windscreen is missing, elsewise on the underside of bonnet lid
