Hi guys,

Heard of this car for sale, owner has had it 11 years and says it's in mint condition (yes I know they all say that!)

Anyway, sketchy details are: 141,000miles, full service history, black.

That's all I know so far but might go and see it.

What ballpark figure do you think, he reckons £10-12??

Any advice appreciated.

Joe.

Aye, 10-12k is fair depending on condition, has it had a top end rebuild? if not I would want a leak down test before purchase.

Hello a good PPI report would tell you more which is a must when buying.I have had three done so far well worth the money and it has saved me buying a load of junk.Still looking for a 911/930 turbo 87-89 black myself.Look in magazines and Ebay for a price guide see how much they are going for.

Just actually managed to speak to the guy. It's had no engine work but says his mechanic says it doesn't need it? It's actually a 911 SC targa and he definately wants 12k for it but is in no hurry to sell.

I'm not really after a targa but was worth a call I suppose.

I'll just keep on looking.

If it's really a decent targa, it could be a better deal than a coupe. Having said that at 141K it might not be.

I'd not worry too much about the mechanicals, they'll be expensive if you get someone to do them, but nowhere near as steep as a rebuild on the shell.

The shell in the targa and cab will be weaker, an this means it'll rot faster. Ultimately this will make them rarer, and this is an argument for their increasing value with time.

On the other hand it could cost you more to get it sorted. I believe that targas go for a fair bit less than coupes, presumably due to their current desireability.

If it's in reasonable nick it could be worth the money. If I were you I'd eyeball the car myself. Personally I'm not too sure about these people who check out cars commercially. It'd be too easy to say "That car is crap", pass Go and collect your £200.

If you have no idea what you're buying, it'd be a good idea to have a freind that does, loads of money or a full helping of luck.

It's a G50 'boxed car. I'd be happy buying it at £10k to use and enjoy, not so happy at £12k as I'd be thinking about that nice 1983 65,000 mile GPW SC Cabriolet that's just appeared in Porsche Post for £12,250.....Delbert - an SC that is better value than a 3.2 .

There are loads of 3.2s about - this car is hardly the bargian of the century (it'd have to be at about £8k for that to be the case).

All IMHO of course - but you did ask for comments

Joe, i know of a black '88 G50 coupe with whale tail and fuchs (black centres, polished outers) with linen leather and excellent history (98k miles), RHD, very very very clean, but not a show car, recent TOAD Cat 1 alarm.

It belonged to a close friend of mine who died a month ago after fighting leukemia for a year.

Contact me off line if you want to know more. His widow would be looking for 13k but doesn't want tyre kickers.

I thought he just said it was an SC Targa. I think you need to be looking at an incredibly tidy SC Targa for £12K...! All the advise I was given was that an SC should be pretty much your cheapest 911 option, and of the variants the Targa will be the cheapest again. £10k max if its a good'n, just IMHO.

I picked up a tidy 3.2 from a specialist for just under £13k last year (see profile). I think that was a damn good price now looking at the current market.

Oh and yes Popov, you did well - assuming your car is RHD. If it is, it's a good investment. If it's lhd, Europe seems to want these cars now - I've just (fingers crossed) sold my lhd 3.2 cab back to Germany

It wasn't an SC Targa when I heard about it on the grapevive and wrote the title, but when I actually spoke to the owner it turned into one

Oh, my fault for not reading through the posts apologies Popov. He's having a big larf then. As Popov says, the Targa is at the bottom of the heap value-wise, although I like them - more headroom in the back for adults and an airier feel than a coupe.
