bizarrely my Mk1 restoration project has got the clutch stuck... with no drive to the gearbox.

any suggestions?

Sounds like the clutch adjuster screw is wound out too far. With the slack removed from the linkage - remove the spring on top of the slave cylinder to do this - you should have 0.020" clearance.
Don't forget to adjust the clutch overthrow stop. I normally release this and wind it out quite a bit, then I set the clutch arm clearance, then re-set the overthrow stop last of all. It's a good idea to change the clutch arm for the later, thicker one. Those early clutch arms are a real pain if the ball on the end is a bit worn or if the pivot pin is worn. I've even had experience of the ball snapping off in use. The movement of the clutch mechanism is so small at the thrust bearing shaft end that a small bit of wear can cause enormous problems.
