I'm guessing I wont get many responses to this on a gaming forum, but thought I'd put it out there. I've always liked computers, and I've generally always liked playing games, but recently, I can't seem to muster any motivation.

I'm coming up 38 now so maybe I've grown out of it?

I have what most average folks would consider to be a bloody good PC gaming rig, which cost a small fortune. I have a large superwide monitor. I have audiophile grade audio. I have a Xbox controller. I have a Logitech G27 steering wheel, which I figured I would love as I am a petrol head. So its not like I lack the gear.

Yet half the time, it seems like too much effort. I almost seem to have to force myself to play games. I am still impressed with the graphics and quite often I find it fun to play, although I am useless, so sometimes I also find it frustrating and turn it off. Perhaps games now are too hard and demand too much attention, practice and concentration? When I grew up many games were a joystick, 8 directions and a fire button. Now you seem to have to learn about 50 different buttons. Sometimes I'd rather throw darts at my dart board just for the mindless simplicity of it. The rest of the time, I'd rather just listen some tunes and browse sites like PH.

Has anyone else found this? It seems a bit odd to me that I suddenly find gaming a bit of a chore despite having impressive hardware to do it. It almost seems like a petrolhead who owns a superb drivers car that suddenly can't find themselves bothered to go for a drive, but if anything, I'm as much in love with driving and cars as ever - despite the fact my car is probably worth less than my computer rig. Is there any hope for me or have I really just grown out of it all?

I find most games boring now and that is something I never expected to say, though at 42 I should probably be doing something else!

VR is probably my last attempt to get back involved. Though I did quite like the latest release of Doom.

Yeah thats the last game I found myself enjoying, Doom. I LOVED the original Quake which was my first PC game (I had Amigas before that). I put so many hours on that game. Doom was like a throwback to that. Even that though, I've not managed to finish.

Another game I like is Far Cry 4, mainly for the graphics and general freedom of the environment but its a little too much wandering about doing nothing much, then you get to the action bits and get wiped out hehe

I bought GTA V, luckily I only paid £4 for it, but I played for an hour. Ran a few people over, wasn't exactly sure what else I was meant to do, and haven't played it since.

VR is tempting but I feel its throwing more money at something I might still never use.

I'm quite old and loved video games when I was younger, but now I cannot get into them. I need something that is relatively easy to pick up and can by played in 10-15 minute segments.

I will still play Postal 2 or Unreal Tournament as they both fit that criteria but newer games seem to require to much dedication.

Feel pretty much exactly the same way, similar age to you as well.

I bought Battlefield1 a few months ago, and have barely touched it. Fifa17 with came with the console has had about 2-3 plays of 20-30 minutes each, you need to sink far too much time into them to even be mildly competent.

Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 I played a lot until relatively recently, simply because it was pick up and shoot shoot shoot, didn't really require too much effort. Actually, I would only play these offline as the online players would wipe the floor with me. I feel the same, I need to be able to play in short bursts, but most games seem to demand more commitment than that now.

Interesting, I really liked the look of BF1 and considered getting it, but from what you're saying it would end up going the same way.

Clearly I am not alone with these feelings. Gaming seems to be a young persons endeavour and I'm not that young any more. In a way its annoying because I feel like I WANT to play them, I just can't be bothered because it seems too much like hard work.

Maybe it's because they are not fun anymore.

Though my son had a RetroPie for Christmas and nearly every retro game going and we have spent no more than 2 hours playing the 1000 games available.

Yep. I have an opportunity to play games now. Instead, I'm sat on here, on my expensive gaming rig, listening to 80s and 90s music on my headphones, and talking about how I CBA to play games anymore hehe

I've even tried a few games myself I enjoyed as a youngster. Christ, I must have been easily pleased back then....

39 here and I'm the same. I have a xbox one S which is bascially a UHD blu ray player :-)

I like to play simple, pick up and play games. But anything that requires complex controls, learning lots of moves or bit and bobs to play it and I can;t be bothered. Example. COD 4 multiplayer was excellent, by about COD 6 it just got silly and too complicated, ruined it. Same with Zombies, the early maps were excellent, then they slowly got more and more complex and worse with each one.

I'm exactly the same. I recently downloaded Total War: Warhammer. It's an excellent game and I love the fantasy setting. It has all the elements that should make me love it, but the core gameplay is the same as Rome, Medieval and Shogun, games I sunk many hours into years ago.

I've done the hard part, I've learnt the basics of how to play the game, but there just seems to be a pointlessness to it now. Hence why I am browsing Pistonheads rather than playing it!

I've lost interest in games generally, but I'd love to spend lots of time on race tracks in cars. As I have neither the time nor money to do it IRL I'm now a virtual racer. The only games I play are driving/racing games, and with VR it's pretty awesome. Haven't played a shooter for years.

It's good to just accept that there are games out there that don't hold any appeal for you. Broad church and all that.

With only a few exceptions, I want to know I can get through a game in 8-10 hours then be done. If it cost me under £20 then that's reasonable VFM, especially if I can sell/trade in for a bit. The open-ended stuff just doesn't have a big appeal any more as I just don't have the time.

Maybe it's just not for you.

I've been gaming since I was three, when my dad bought a Megadrive. I think I love it, and enjoy it now as much as I ever have, and perhaps I love gaming more now than ever.

I can't think of a day, unless I was ill or shattered, that I haven't wanted to be playing games.

I'm also 38, used to game all the time but suddenly realised over the last few years that I rarely bother any more. The PC is old but reasonable enough to run most stuff at moderate settings, I have a 360 but can't remember the last time I turned it on.

I've recently bought a 4k TV and was considering getting a One S mainly as a 4k Bluray player with the convenience of it having the ability to play games as well. Noticed 'Project Scorpio' is due later this year so may hold off as the One S will have run-out bargains ahead of the launch of the new console.

Last time I DID play, I realised that I hate online multiplayer stuff - if you're only a casual gamer you won't have any fun (as someone else noted, you have to spend hours and hours to get to a standard where you could compete). A mate of mine was playing Titanfall and I just watched as he did broadly the same things over and over and over.... I found it intensely boring! I like a narrative, some way of feeling like I'm making some progress whereas online games are the same maps/levels and no sense of achieving anything.

The last game i completed was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I think. I used to love strategy games like Warcraft and Starcraft on solo play, maybe I'll go back to something I don't have to learn and see how I get on...

I'm sort of the reverse. 36 and haven't really been into games since I was in my teens. However I played rocket league at a friends house and this has resulted in a ps4. Even had to get a TV as we've not had one in years. I don't play it a stupid amount, but can get into a bit of a session if the missus is out.

One thing I've noticed that seems fairly common with other games I've looked at is the lack multiplayer on the local machine. So if I wanted to play a racing game with a friend they'd have to be at their house! I remember the fun when I was younger of your mates coming round and playing each other on a split screen.

In my early 20's I played almost all the time. Back then only working 4 days a week meant 3 days of gaming. I'd buy many games but also rent loads from Lovefilm. My PS3 has seen over 50 games, many with Platinum trophies. But then one day I just felt burnt out and fed up at how much money I'd wasted so I didn't bother for a while. New job started so didn't have time for a year or so. Bought a PS4 because people were pushing me to play Destiny (which is meh, probably because I have no time to play with others and practice). I've always loved the Uncharted series and these days I only pick games which will be really good. Like Metal Gear, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Skyrim, etc. I even have a wheel with a proper mount and chair for F1 and GT6 but don't play regularly enough to get good (although last F1 was the best one I've played)

I think it's a phase as when I came back and only played games I actually wanted to play I loved it. Now I'm playing Ratchet and Clank which is a kids game but was a game I loved back in the PS2 days and plays really well.

And causing loads of grief on the roads. The amount of middle aged plonkers thinking they are Bradley Wiggins drives me mad. Please get out of the way of my car smile
