is it me or are more drivers missing races of late due to injuries, sato first, now montoya... are the cars really any safer or were these just freak incidents...

Sato had a stomach bug and Montoya hurt his arm playing tennis.

Neither related to F1.

Webber is racing with broken ribs but doesn't through in the towel, JPM has a hair line crack and calls for nursie...

He will never be World champ, they have to be dragged out of the car, not dragged to it...

Would you argue with Ron?

Seriously though, a fractured shoulder is a bit more dodgy than a broken rib and subjecting the body to 4g is not going to make it any better. Bear in mind Webber's injury was caused simply by not warming up properly before going out in his car!

I simply don't agree, being squeezed in the ribs by 4g is going to hurt ...Webber just gets on with it and doesn't want to fuss ...

Do you think JPM would race if he had won the first 2 rounds of F1 ... you bet he would have, this is a question of motivation or the lack of it and you can expect an early exit from Maclaren if he doesn't perform

Yes but you can't do anything about broken ribs, just take some pain killers (as MW did) and get on with it. Driving with a fractured shoulder could lead to much more permanent damage.

But it isn't his decision to make, it was McLaren's medical team that made it.

Was it Webber who had to abandon a race cos his bottom was too warm?

To be fair to Montoya, they probably do have to drag him out of the car - mainly because his arse is getting to be a much snugger fit in there these days...

..and Mansell missed the first couple of races in one season cos he was too chubby to get in the car?

I thought he was looking considerably leaner and fitter since he moved from Grove to Woking. Maybe it's his wallet that hinders his exit from his car...

I guess a broken rib can be painful but you can do something to strap and protect it.

A fractured shoulder on the other hand is a very different proposition - as I know to my cost. 8 weeks after dislocating and fracturing a bone in my shoulder I am just about in a position to steer a car with more than one arm. However there are still a number of muscles that are not working properly and it may be weeks yet before it is back to anyting like full use.

Shoulders are the most complex joints in the body and tend to sustain permanent damage easily if not treated carefully - not a good idea for a sportsperson with a large earning potential ahead of them.

I guess he was just trying to keep fit at the time - same as me. Best to stay in bed I think ...

Except I have another trip to physio tomorrow.

The Webber 'rib' story is a strange one, it comes from his manager and partner, and the story is he broke his run because he didn't warm up properly. I for one think it's an 'excuses in early' story, as I may have said before, I think Webber is massively over-rated and I think Heidfeld's performance in Malaysia has more to do with this story than Webber's rib. Anyway, a broken rib is not that serious, JPM's shoulder is far more of a problem for driving an F1 car.

Your ribs take a battering in go karts, I can't imagine the forces going through them in an F1 car cornering with 4g lateral load...
