I'm renovating a 2009 Specialized Allez which is white with chips and scuffs. I'm considering a colour change but not wanting to spend much. I thought about maybe getting a local powder-coating place to do the frame and worry about the forks separately. I'm not too bothered about decals, just wanting to tidy it up and create a hard-wearing finish. Maybe I'll do the whole thing black or maybe (as this is the bike I rode to Le Mans) I'll do it blue frame and orange forks in as close to the gulf colours as is practical.

Anyone know an outfit near South London/Surrey/Kent/Sussex who do this kind of work or any tips?

This was Bristol, but 2 years ago I had my steel winter bike blasted and 2 coat powder coated for £80, base coat of light blue then a sparkle lacquer to give it a metallic look.

The same place repainted my Colnago carbon forks but that involved painting decals and a black to clear (bare carbon fade), he charged £75 for that.

Edit - oh, just read the 'not wanting to spend much' line. Have a look at their portfolio anyway - might give you some ideas

Maybe have a go yourself:

If Borough Green in Kent isn't too far I recommend Curtis at CSP for blasting and powder coating:

Tell him Tim at West Malling Cycles recommended him and he'll look after you.

Some interesting ideas here. I was reading about that special DIY spray paint - might be fun to get the frame blasted and powder coated a basic single colour then do the forks and add some detail with a http://spray.bike can.

I'll try and have chat with the chap in Kent this week.

Yeah, it's a 2nd hand Allez I paid £200 for in 2014 - came with a free matching helmet, shoes, mini-pump, token tri bars and a cyclops turbo! I'm turning it into a commuter so looking for a tough coating as much as anything. Just seems a shame to go full hammerite.

I ended up taking the frame to a local blasting/powder coating place called foremost coatings. http://foremostcoatings.com/
They will change the colour for about £70 + vat

The refurb has begin, thread on it here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Could try a spray on vinyl such as plasti or fulldip http://www.fulldip.com/en/ I sprayed some on my mtb last year as the rear triangle was looking tatty and even though the chain hits the rear stays quite regularly it doesn't seem to damage the dip whereas before it would take chunks out of the paint.
